Job Overview

With over 65 years of experience, Ferguson Transport & Shipping are the ideal employer for those looking to start their career within the haulage industry. The successful applicant will work alongside our experienced and qualified mechanics to learn the key skills required to carry out services, inspection and maintenance on our varied fleet of plant & machinery, including cranes, vans and generators. Following initial internal training getting hands on experience, the formal qualification via an apprenticeship in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair at SVQ Level 3 will commence, making this a fantastic opportunity for those looking to start their career in a mechanical role.

Duties in the Workplace
  • Working alongside the Mobile Plant Fitter to ensure all inspections and repairs are carried out according to the manufacturer’s procedures and in a safe and responsible manner within reasonable times for all plant and equipment.
  • Undertaking training to learn how to ensure that all plant and equipment is inspected and serviced within legal compliance regulations and in line with company policies.
  • Travel to other depots as required with trained personnel to carry out inspections and repairs.
  • Ensure that all service paperwork is completed accurately as per instructions.
  • Assist with maintaining workshop housekeeping.
  • Using specialist equipment and tools as and when required, when trained to do so.
  • Develop skills and knowledge through internal in-house training and supervision prior to undertaking formal apprenticeship training.

Applicants must be committed, enthusiastic and hard working. They must have the ability to work as part of a team.

A driving licence will be required for this role; therefore applicants who do not yet have their driving licence should be working to achieving this or prepared to do so when of age.

Following the formal training, full time employment will continue as a qualified Plant Fitter.

Apprenticeship Training Programme

During the four-year apprenticeship programme, the successful applicant will attend training in Inverness, where they will learn:

  • Scheduled Servicing / Maintenance and repair of Vehicles using specialised equipment to Identify and locate complex faults.
  • Overhauling and reconditioning components. Testing and measuring vehicle performance.

Throughout the training, apprentices are supported internally by our qualified mechanics, putting their new skills and knowledge to good use on our plant and equipment.

Entry Requirements
  • 4/5 years of secondary education with ideally passes in science (particularly physics) and/or technical based studies.
  • An enthusiasm for mechanics.
  • An ability to understand technical data and apply this in practice.
  • The ability to work on their own as well as part of a team.
