The role also includes the overhaul, cleaning, and refurbishment of key mechanical and structural components, such as 5th wheels, radiator packs, and associated assemblies, ensuring that recovered parts are returned to service in a fully functional and compliant condition. Contributing to wider workshop operations by performing general mechanical tasks, inspections, repairs, and technical support as reasonably required to meet business needs. This is a hands‑on engineering position requiring strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a methodical approach to dismantling, repair, and inspection tasks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Safely dismantle vehicles identified for end-of-life or scrappage, following company procedures and safety standards.
  • Identify and remove components suitable for reuse, ensuring they are stored, labelled, and recorded appropriately.
  • Conduct inspection, cleaning, and refurbishment of reusable components, including 5th wheels, radiator packs, brackets, pipework, hydraulic fittings, and other vehicle assemblies.
  • Overhaul and prepare components for reinstallation, ensuring all parts meet operational and safety requirements before reuse.
  • Liaise with the Workshop Engineers and Fleet Controllers to identify required parts or assemblies for reuse in the live fleet.
  • Support inventory management by recording dismantled components, including condition and serial numbers, into the internal stock system.
  • Assist in the diagnosis of component condition and suitability for reuse.
  • Maintain an organised and safe working environment, ensuring dismantled vehicles and components are handled and stored appropriately.
  • Operate tools and lifting equipment safely in line with company and statutory regulations.
  • Support workshop projects, fleet repairs, and reassembly activities as required.
  • Assist in the disposal of non‑reusable components in accordance with environmental standards and waste management policies.
  • Contribute to process improvements related to dismantling, recycling, and component refurbishment.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues across the Workshop, Quality, and Fleet departments to ensure all operations meet performance and quality objectives.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of work completed, including photographs and checklists where applicable.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties to support workshop operations and the needs of the business.
Key Requirements
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem‑solving ability.
  • Ability to work methodically and with precision in dismantling and component inspection.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Good organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a wider engineering team.
  • A proactive and safety‑conscious attitude.
  • Willingness to support wider workshop activities as required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum City & Guilds NVQ Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician or equivalent qualification in automotive or mechanical engineering.
  • Proven experience working with heavy vehicles, plant, or similar mechanical equipment.
  • Strong mechanical and technical knowledge, with the ability to strip, inspect, and rebuild major components.
  • Previous experience in dismantling, refurbishment, or mechanical rebuild environments desirable.
  • Familiarity with hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems advantageous.
  • Competent use of hand and power tools, lifting equipment, and workshop machinery.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental requirements within a workshop environment.
