An secondment opportunity has arisen for a ward manager position on Hurst Place at Tameside General Hospital, for 6 month period. Hurst Place is a 15 bed, mental health rehabilitation unit for males who suffer with complex and enduring mental health illnesses. Our service users may also present with physical health conditions and other comorbidities.
The job will involve clinical leadership alongside operational management.
Main duties of the job
- Management of the clinical team: ensuring that the team are working effectively both as individuals and as a team. This includes: recruitment, retention, development, and support and performance management of their staff.
- Management of the Service User Experience: acting as the clinical lead for the unit, leading the multidisciplinary team, ensuring that their team are responsive to service user needs and that the clinical documentation is robust.
- Management of local Governance Processes: auditing and evaluating the services as required by the Trust and Directorate policies. Reporting into the Governance and Clinical Business Unit (CBU) meetings and to the Clinical Services Manager.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- The provision of effective clinical leadership to and management of ward staff.
- To maintain personal contact with patients, their relatives and carers. Being sensitive to their needs for respect, privacy and dignity and to act as the senior point of contact on the ward
- To lead on the formulation of staff rotas to ensure the most effective use of manpower and resources in relation to service user need and ward activity.
- To lead on the monitoring of all staff sickness, in accordance with Trust policies.
- To ensure that all staff follow the guidelines identified in the Trust and National policies.
- To participate in the investigation of patient complaints, as per Trust Complaints procedure, aiming to settle complaints with local resolutions at ward level. When unable to do so, to communicate without delay to the Service Manager.
- The post holder will be responsible for maintaining their own personal development and will take a lead on achieving the training and educational objectives of junior staff, including learners, in an environment which is conducive to learning.
- To take responsibility for own clinical and managerial development in support of the Service Manager.
- To participate in the annual individual performance review/yearly conversation of all ward staff and to assist in the formulation of personal development plans which reflect the individuals potential in meeting the ward aims.
- To ensure that all staff receive education and training in accordance to the requirements of PREP and Scope of Professional Practice.
- To ensure that all newly qualified staff receive ongoing support, through preceptorship.
- To ensure that all learner nurses have access to their identified assessor.
- To act as a mentor for learner nurses
- Recruitment and Selection Responsibilities
- The post holder will coordinate and participate in the recruitment and selection of staff as required.
- To participate in employment interviews for staff vacancies, Bands 1 to 6.
- To ensure that all newly appointed staff are introduced to the ward environment and receive a period of orientation and support to meet their individual needs.

Person specification
Education/Qualifications
- Registered Mental Health Nurse with current registration or equivalent professional qualification.
- Evidence of post graduate training and / or continuing professional development.
- Leadership Course
- Clinical Supervision Training
Experience
- Experience at Band 6
- Supervising and professionally developing junior staff
- Working within a Governance framework.
- Clinical Leadership.
- Working with high-level policies, procedures and guidelines.

Knowledge

- Awareness of current standards and good practice guidance for for Step-down rehabilitation units.Clinical governance and the importance of this at a local level.
- Knowledge and experience of working with external agencies including MAPPA, SOMU. Experience of working with service users who have complex needs and significant index offences..
- Implementation of local Clinical Governance objectives and evidence of improvements in practice due to audit findings.
