Variable Hour Transit Driver (Preston) – City of Pocatello
The Part-time Transit Driver operates Transit Department vehicles on a fixed route or schedule, or provides door-to-door transportation by request for eligible patrons. The job requires safe driving skills and exceptional customer service to ensure passengers are served in a timely, reliable, and safe manner.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Operates Department vehicles, providing passengers with timely, reliable, and safe transportation. Vehicles may include buses, vans, paratransit vans for handicapped passengers, and other Department inventory as assigned.
- Collects fares and/or validates passes or transportation vouchers.
- Conducts pre-trip and post-trip vehicle checks (fuel and fluid levels, tires, and any mechanical issues or damage).
- Assists passengers on and off the vehicle as needed, including operating a wheelchair lift and securing wheelchairs.
- Answers passenger questions and provides fare and route information, schedules, transfers, and maps. Promotes a positive passenger experience and maintains order in the vehicle.
- Maintains route logs, reports, and documentation.
- Performs all work duties in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
- Performs other duties as assigned. Management reserves the right to reassign duties and responsibilities at any time.
Acceptable Experience, Training, Licenses And/Or Certifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Class B CDL with airbrake and passenger endorsements required.
- One (1) year of large vehicle driving experience preferred.
An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge Of
- Operations of vehicles in the Department inventory to provide timely, reliable, and safe transportation.
- Transit routes, schedules, fares, and related passenger information.
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other applicable regulations affecting transportation to the public.
- Federal (OSHA) regulations and City safety practices for operating public transportation vehicles.
- State, local, and other applicable traffic and vehicle safety codes.
- Operation of a personal computer and job-related software.
Skill And Ability To
- Operate vehicles to provide safe, reliable transportation.
- Perform safety and damage inspections and refer problems to mechanics.
- Assist passengers on and off vehicles, including wheelchair lifts and securing wheelchairs.
- Operate a personal computer and two-way radio.
- Read and interpret maps, schedules, and manuals; maintain route records and documentation.
- Maintain a professional demeanor; communicate effectively in English.
- Complete assignments timely and comply with all rules and City policies.
Physical Requirements
Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds with assistance; ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and operate a vehicle. Visual and hearing capacity to perform essential functions; reasonable accommodations available.
