Job Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic trainee Biomedical Scientist to join our Haematology laboratory team at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to join a professional and well established team that is focused on the patients we serve and the hospital services we support.

The role of a biomedical scientist is to perform investigations or process tissue and body fluids which are used to diagnose, monitor and treat patients. Under the direction and supervision of qualified staff the post holder will gain broad experience in the delivery of routine and specialist diagnostic laboratory services in accordance with national and professional standards.

The post-holder will be expected to complete an agreed programme of training, over a period of 12 months, within the Haematology laboratory, which has been accredited for training purposes. The training will be delivered in all aspects of Biomedical Science to achieve Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration.

This is a fixed‑term position for a period of 1 year and the training will need to be completed within that period.

Main duties of the job

To undertake Biomedical Scientist training which will involve working in all sections of the Haematology laboratory.

To learn through training and by assisting qualified staff, to produce a high quality service in all sections.

Standard Operating Procedures
  • Preparation of biomedical specimens and materials.
  • Analysis of a range of sample types using a variety of techniques.
  • Processing of biological materials.
  • Using the laboratory information management system to accurately book, update and retrieve patient data.
  • Learning how to interpret analytical results, including quality control (QC) data, and to decide what actions are necessary.
  • Gaining knowledge of the analytical techniques used, how to troubleshoot, adjust and maintain instrumentation.

Essential Qualifications
  • Possess an HCPC approved degree
Knowledge & Experience
  • Some experience and knowledge of laboratory investigations, processes and procedures.
  • Understanding of laboratory safety, including infectious diseases, COSHH, spillages, waste disposal.
  • Computer and keyboard skills together with experience of common software packages and preferably previous experience of the department.
  • Ability to work accurately from written protocols.
