About this opportunity

Westmorland and Furness Council is seeking an experienced and proactive individual to join our South Lakeland team as a Traffic Management Officer. This is a key role supporting the delivery a wide range of traffic and road safety schemes.

You will be responsible for the preparation, design, and processing of both temporary and permanent traffic regulation schemes, including casualty reduction, parking, and small‑scale traffic management projects. The role includes producing scheme drawings, drafting reports, issuing work packages and contracts, and ensuring all works comply with legislation and council procedures.

As part of the South Lakeland team, you will help manage a busy and varied workload, supporting the programming and delivery of schemes across the area. You will supervise technical staff, liaise with contractors and stakeholders, and provide advice to Members and the public. This is a predominantly office‑based role with some site visits and meetings.

We are looking for someone with highways experience and a strong understanding of traffic orders, road safety audits, and design of traffic signs and road markings. You should be confident in managing projects, communicating effectively, and working collaboratively in a team environment. The ideal candidate will be proactive, customer‑focused, and flexible, with excellent written and interpersonal skills.
