Technical Director - Building Risk & Compliance (BRAC)

To support our ambitious growth plans, we have a great opportunity to join our Building and Real Estate Division. SOCOTEC is the market-leading independent provider of Building Control; we pride ourselves on being the experts and leading authority on building controls within the industry. A senior leadership role responsible for driving technical excellence, project delivery, and strategic growth across Building Regulations and Compliance Consultancy services. The Technical Director will lead service line development, mentor high‑performing teams, enhance technical capability, and collaborate with the Operations Director to shape business strategy, structure and expansion. Working with some of the most prestigious and growing clients and teams, you will have the opportunity to help grow the business and develop a class‑leading service to the industry. Working across a variety of projects both autonomously and as part of a wider team, tasks you will be required to undertake as part of your role include (but are not limited to):

Strategic & Technical Leadership
  • Partner with the Operations Director to define and implement long‑term strategic goals for the business unit, including service line expansion, structural development and market positioning
  • Drive technical quality, innovation and consistency across all projects and services
  • Act as the principal technical authority, providing expert advice and direction on building regulation, compliance and associated legislation
  • Lead the continual development of service lines to align with emerging industry needs and regulatory changes
Project Delivery Excellence
  • Oversee delivery of complex building regulation and compliance consultancy projects, ensuring technical rigour, commercial efficiency and client satisfaction
  • Implement robust project management processes to support milestones, budgets and KPIs are consistently achieved
  • Provide governance and oversight, where required, to ensure all project outputs meet or exceed professional and statutory standards
Business Development & Client Engagement
  • Identify, develop and secure new business opportunities across key market sectors
  • Strengthen existing client relationships and foster long‑term partnerships through consistent delivery and technical expertise
  • Support the Operations Director in achieving revenue and growth targets through diversification and strategic positioning of the business unit
  • Represent the business at industry events, forums and professional networks to enhance brand reputation and market presence
Service Line Development
  • Lead the creation and refinement of specialist service lines within the Building Regulation and Compliance division
  • Evaluate market trends to inform service innovation, pricing models and delivery strategies
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally with other technical and operational leads to integrate services and optimise resource sharing
Training, Mentoring & Technical Governance
  • Develop and deliver a structured training and mentoring programme to build technical capability and succession within the team
  • Conduct performance reviews, CPD planning and competency assessments aligned with professional standards (RICS, CABE, etc.)
  • Champion a culture of learning, collaboration and continuous improvement
  • Ensure knowledge transfer across teams and consistent application of technical methodologies
Quality, Compliance & Safety
  • Uphold rigorous quality assurance, compliance and safety standards across all technical operations
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of legislative and regulatory changes, ensuring proactive adaptation of internal procedures
  • Lead technical audits and peer reviews to ensure consistency, accuracy and excellence in delivery
Health & Safety Leadership
  • Champion a positive and proactive health and safety culture through exemplary leadership
  • Ensure compliance with SOCOTEC and client quality, safety and environmental systems
  • Promote a culture where safety, workplace health and environmental responsibility are prioritised
