About the role
The Structures Inspector will undertake civil, structural and bridge condition inspections in line with inspection schedules and CPS policies, procedures and guidance. Inspections will be general and principal. The postholder supports the delivery of the Structures Inspections Programme, ensuring inspections are properly permitted, coordinated and executed to required standards.
Key responsibilities
- Inspect and identify defects in structures of various form and material in compliance with CS 450 Guidance.
- Ensure all necessary briefings, health and safety documentation and other provisions are in place prior to inspection activities.
- Monitor and update the inspection programme to reflect progress and changes.
- Liaise with the Logistics Manager and Senior Inspector to book road space and traffic management to facilitate inspections when needed.
- Ensure defect reporting meets quality and regulatory standards; raise concerns when appropriate for safety or public decency.
- Carry out site supervision and ensure work on site follows the brief.
- Keep accurate logs and records of all structure inspections.
- Deliver constructive feedback to improve inspection quality and adherence to standards.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
- Track supplier progress and ensure timely execution of inspection tasks.
- Conduct on‑site inspections and ensure compliance with current standards.
- Collaborate with internal teams (Asset, Project Delivery, Service Delivery) and maintain effective relationships with external partners.
- Assist with configuring new systems for collecting inspection data.
- Report monthly Inspection KPIs.
Qualifications
- Minimum three years in highway inspection, construction or a related civil engineering field at Inspector level.
- Must be certified (or working towards) the Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme as an Inspector.
- Understanding of defects in concrete, steel, masonry and other materials, including causes and implications.
- Knowledge of testing techniques and when/how to apply them.
- Knowledge of principal repair techniques for common structure types and materials.
- Strong judgement, attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines and communicate findings.
- Positive attitude and advanced understanding of health and safety legislation, risk management and safe working practices.
- Full driving licence with a maximum of three penalty points.
- Proficiency with structure inspection tools and IT.
- Digital skills in Agile Assets, Confirm and Microsoft Office.
- Experience in inspection programmes or infrastructure delivery.
- Ability to manage and motivate teams.
- Knowledge of traffic management and road space permitting.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
- Familiarity with inspection standards and quality assurance processes.
- A current CSCS card appropriate to enable site inspections.
