About The Role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Temporary Works Designer to join our Power Transmission & Distribution business in Derby. We are open to both full‑time, part‑time (including job share) and flexible working arrangements.

Role Purpose

To work with project teams, designers and subcontractors through the design phase to deliver the safe and suitable scope of works in line with project objectives. Take responsibility for design delivery and suitability across Power T&D construction projects with a particular focus on Temporary Works delivery. Provide advice on constructability and sequencing of civil design and temporary works for Power T&D around cabling, overhead lines and substations. Engage in bid development, tendering and innovation projects alongside the Team Lead & Design Delivery Manager.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and co‑ordination of civil and temporary works from feasibility to final removal, including preparation of in‑house temporary works design.
  • Ensure timely delivery and quality of designs, including reports, calculations and drawings that comply with client and national technical standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA).
  • Capture client requirements – including those not explicitly stated within the contract – and contribute to robust pricing and design solutions.
  • Reinforced concrete design and detailing.
  • Construction site layouts and CDM implementation.
  • Excavation support for tower foundations or cable trenches.
  • Formwork and setting templates for reinforced concrete foundations.
  • Piling and crane platforms.
  • Access road design and traffic management plans.
  • Checks on protective scaffolds for roads, railways and third‑party property.
  • Catenary support system – in‑house scaffold alternative.
  • Backstays and temporary steelwork for tower support.
  • Temporary overhead line diversions.
  • Production of in‑house temporary works design.
  • Assist in tender process – interpret scope of works and provide advice.
  • Check design calculations performed by colleagues.
  • Collaborate with project teams to maintain common objectives and ensure work aligns with project priorities.
  • Liaise with appropriate personnel to achieve optimal installation procedures; undertake site visits as required.
  • Embed "Safety by Design" principles in all activities, ensuring compliance with Health & Safety regulations and Balfour Beatty procedures.
  • Assist in training new designers and/or trainees.
  • Undertake other duties as required by the Team Lead or Design Delivery Manager.
  • Maintain compliance with CDM regulations and all legal and regulatory requirements associated with design outputs.

Skills Required
  • Degree level education or equivalent with formal training in civil engineering and/or geotechnical engineering.
  • Professional membership (ICE or IStructE) and working towards Chartered Engineer status.
  • Strong, proven post‑graduate experience in the civil engineering industry.
  • Strong understanding and working knowledge of BS 5975.
  • Experience supervising sub‑consultants or subcontractors.
  • Proven experience designing civil engineering works.
  • Proven experience managing design of civil or temporary works.
  • Experience in the design and checking of temporary works for civil engineering projects.
  • IT literacy (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, CAD).
