Job summary

JOB BAND: D
CONTRACT TYPE: Permanent, Full-time
DEPARTMENT: BBC Archives Technology & Services, BBC Technology & Media Operations
LOCATION: London - Broadcast Centre - Engineers are expected to be on-site at least 3 days a week
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: Up to £60,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

We are seeking an experienced Senior Systems Engineer with a strong background in broadcast and archive engineering to join our Operations & Software Engineering Team. This role is pivotal in ensuring the reliability, scalability, and innovation of our Content Digitisation systems in Library & Curatorial Services (L&CS), media asset management platforms, and long‑term content archives. The ideal candidate will be both a hands‑on technical expert and a collaborative partner across Operations, project work and working with our Architecture, Product & Development Teams.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT
  • Design, integrate, and maintain broadcast, storage, and archive systems to meet operational and strategic needs.
  • Ensure interoperability between production, post‑production, and archive environments.
  • Take part in agile ceremonies, such as stand‑ups, retros, and backlog reviews to ensure work streams are carefully monitored and delivery needs met.
  • Collaborate effectively with vendors, development teams, product managers and stakeholders to meet the business’ technical requirements.
  • Provide engineering support for broadcast and archive systems, diagnosing and resolving complex technical issues, monitoring system performance, availability and data integrity across broadcast and archival workflows.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Proven experience in Linux systems engineering, in the form of a recognised qualification (to BEng or MSc level) or equivalent experience.
  • Have a proven understanding of Systems Engineering ideally with experience of broadcast and supporting on‑prem and cloud systems.
  • Networking (IP, multicast, VLANs) and server/storage architectures (SAN, NAS, LTO, object storage).
  • Configure and deploy infrastructure, scripts, orchestration & monitoring to ensure the stability and visibility of systems and services.
  • Experience translating project, user and product requirements into technical solutions.

DESIRED:

  • Experience with cloud‑based storage and archive solutions (AWS, Azure, GCP) desirable.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills and ability to manage and prioritise workloads in line with fast‑moving business and operational priorities.
  • Strong documentation, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience providing cover in an on‑call rota.
