Applications are invited for the post of senior speciality fellow in the HPB unit at Southampton General Hospital. This is a 12 month, fixed term position suitable for a post CCT (or equivalent) level surgeon with significant experience in operative and clinical management of complex tertiary HPB surgery patients.

The successful candidate will be competitive to take up a consultant HPB surgeon post in the UK on completion of the fellowship. The experience will be tailored to the needs of the fellow and will include exposure to the full range of advanced, complex robotic and open HPB surgery.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

The fellow will be responsible for inpatient and outpatient care of complex HPB patients and will have exposure to complex open and robotic HPB operations through 2–3 theatre lists a week. Research and quality improvement activities are widely available.

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed non‑training fellow doctors and dentists. Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.

Essential criteria

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • More than 2 years’ experience in HPB surgery
  • Evidence of successful completion of an ATLS Course
  • Manual dexterity and hand/eye coordination
  • Participation in audit and evidence of ability to work effectively in multi‑professional teams
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and effective communication skills in English
  • Demonstrate good organisational skills, ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
  • Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching

Desirable criteria

  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Experience in advanced laparoscopic HPB surgery as primary operator
  • Breadth of experience with awareness in and outside specialty / medicine
  • Evidence‑based practice use
  • NHS experience with clinical governance and resource constraints; management/financial awareness experience of committee work
  • Contribution to non‑professional organisations and active involvement in audit
  • IT skills
