Job overview

This key role is part of our ePMA journey. The post holder will act as a specialist Lead Technician, providing technical support, configuration and testing expertise, and superuser status for the Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration System(s) (ePMAs) used at WHT. The role is responsible for development and maintenance of the ePMA system(s), meeting current and future needs of the Trust, and leading the change control processes.

Main duties of the job

The post‑holder will:

Support the Lead Pharmacist – ePMA and the Principal Pharmacist – ePMA and Digital Medicines Management in implementing ePMA (software and hardware).

Collaborate with IT and other partners to ensure the ePMA system supports medicines optimisation initiatives.

Assist the Lead Pharmacist – ePMA and Principal Pharmacist – ePMA in developing reports and dashboards to maximise benefits and demonstrate effectiveness.

Provide training for ePMA across all staff groups within the Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Support implementation, maintenance and future development of the ePMA system with the Pharmacy ePMA team and Trust ePMA project team.
  • Serve as a superuser for the ePMA system, ensuring routine housekeeping and contributing to business continuity plans.
  • Define clear, measurable processes and timeframes for completion of system changes and developments.
  • Maintain and update drug template files, implementing required medication workflows and performing reproducible testing.
  • Ensure governance arrangements regarding workflows and drug template files are implemented.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues, facilitating training where required.
  • liaise with external supplier to manage system faults, downtime and upgrades.
  • Build and maintain robust clinical and operational governance structures for the ePMA system.
  • Analyse and interpret complex data, produce reports and communicate findings to the wider Trust.
  • Support digital literacy improvements for Pharmacy staff ahead of ePMA implementation.
  • Prepare risk assessments for use of ePMA, aligning with Lead Pharmacist for ePMA grading and action.
  • Write and develop Trust procedures for the ePMA system.
  • Engage with medical, nursing, midwifery, allied health professionals and support staff for effective ePMA use.
  • Monitor and support error monitoring systems for ePMA.
  • Develop and manage KPIs and targets for the area.
Person specification
Qualifications
  • BTEC and NVQ Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent qualification.
  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council as a practising Pharmacy Technician.
Experience
  • Evidence of experience as a senior technician in a hospital environment.
  • Proven experience managing and supervising staff.
  • Experience using and understanding EPMA systems.
  • Experience building and maintaining EPMA systems.
