Senior (Design) Mechanical Engineer (Building Services)

This role offers an exciting opportunity within SPS Headquarters Estates Team. The postholder will provide support to the SPS Estates Head of Professional and Technical Services by delivering mechanical building services design advice, progressing initiatives and acting as design champion to promote high‑quality outcomes for SPS buildings and estate.

The postholder will:

  • Provide strategic direction and deliver mechanical design advice on behalf of Estates and Technical Services.
  • Ensure design standards are available and reviewed, give project‑specific guidance and support to Project Managers and Estates Maintenance teams on design, operation, maintenance and safety of mechanical systems including HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and BEMS.
  • Undertake inspections and audits to ensure compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Maintain relationships with UK, prison and judicial authorities, other governmental groups, and advisory organisations to share knowledge and contribute to local and national initiatives.

Qualifications and experience required:

  • Membership of a relevant professional body.
  • Comprehensive experience of mechanical building services design and management, especially on significant infrastructure projects.
  • Experience in developing strategic responses to estates business needs.
  • Specialist knowledge of mechanical building systems related to renewables/LZC technologies, climate change, and zero direct emissions.
  • Experience defining and setting technical standards and monitoring performance, with the ability to initiate corrective action (desirable).
