This isn’t just about monitoring flows or reacting to events – it’s about shaping operational strategy, coordinating access to the network, and providing expert engineering leadership in a fast-moving, high-responsibility environment.

Working at the heart of the ECC, you’ll apply your technical knowledge, operational experience and calm decision-making to keep energy flowing for over 11 million customers. You’ll influence stakeholders across the business, guide operational teams, and ensure our plans, responses and processes are robust, safe and future-ready.

This is a highly visible and influential role where your engineering judgement will directly shape how Cadent manages its network today – and how we evolve it for tomorrow.

Why you’ll love this role
  • Be jointly responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the gas transportation network.
  • Develop and implement operating strategies that optimise network performance while meeting regulatory, commercial and customer obligations.
  • Build strong relationships across the business and with external partners, ensuring issues are prioritised, risks are mitigated and customers remain connected.
  • Lead the response to unplanned events, faults and operational changes, providing expert analysis and confident engineering direction.
  • Drive enhancements to ECC processes, governance and tools, embedding best practice and supporting a culture of operational excellence.
What you’ll bring

You’re an experienced operational engineer with strong technical grounding, confident decision-making and the ability to lead in a dynamic Control Centre environment.

Technical & Professional

  • STEM A-levels or degree
  • Professional registration with IGEM or IMechE
  • Strong understanding of gas transportation, fluid dynamics and regulated utility operations
  • Knowledge of Energy Control Centre functions and Control Centre environments

Operational Experience

  • Background in distribution network operations
  • Practical experience in fast-paced engineering or operational settings
  • Ability to analyse complex issues and understand wider business and industry impacts
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to influence stakeholders at all levels
  • Experience guiding teams and supporting continuous improvement

Decision Making

  • Confident problem-solver with sound engineering judgement
  • Able to manage conflicting priorities with accuracy and urgency
