Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced QA Technical Lead to build and lead our QA practice. The ideal candidate will be an experienced, highly skilled Quality Assurance leader that will champion quality for our technology product. We're on a path to build the world's most impactful, fully-automated and holistic financial advice solution, and we need your help to deliver it to as many people as possible.

About Octopus Money

At Octopus Money, we’re on a mission to make money advice accessible to all – because the right advice can turn your life dreams into reality.

The facts are alarming: half of Brits reach retirement age without enough money to live the life they want, financial stress is a leading cause of poor mental health and only 8% of us have access to 1-to-1 advice.

There’s plenty of information out there, but most of us just wish that someone we trust would tell us what to do with our money!

With Octopus, you get a personalised plan and a friendly expert to help you make it happen. We combine advisers, coaches and technology to understand your situation and recommend the right steps for your savings, investments, pensions and more. Then, we make it easy to invest in a custom portfolio, managed by experts.

We believe everyone deserves personal, 1-to-1 advice with their money.

The role and opportunity

Join our dynamic team as a Quality Assurance Tech Lead and grow our QA practice, establish our QA processes, implementing best practices, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, reliable software to our customers. This is a pivotal role requiring a strategic thinker with hands‑on technical expertise, collaborative leadership skills, and the ability to communicate QA best practices in an approachable, yet impactful manner at all levels of seniority.

Day to day you will:
  • Act as a QA advocate across the technology division, promoting a quality-first mindset
  • Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing QA team, fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and ownership
  • Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Developers, DevOps, and other stakeholders to ensure quality is embedded throughout the development and delivery process
  • Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences regarding QA activities, findings, and risks
  • Define and establish QA processes, standards, and metrics for all stages of our lean software development lifecycle
  • Identify and introduce appropriate QA tools and technologies to optimize efficiency and effectiveness
  • Build and maintain a robust automated testing framework
  • Establish and track key quality metrics, providing regular reports and insights to stakeholders
About You

Collaborative and a great team player – You’ll need to work with others from across the business to identify problems, agree solutions and implement changes.

Problem solver at heart with an analytical mindset – You should be someone who gets excited by complex problems and can find creative ways to solve them no matter what your level of knowledge and experience with the subject matter. You should be able to digest complexity and develop a plan to move forward, without losing sight of the important details.

Goal driven and not afraid to get stuck in – We like to set ambitious goals and find creative ways to hit them, even if that means rolling up our sleeves and doing manual tasks before we’ve managed to fully automate them. You should have a bias towards action and getting things done.

Knowledge and Experience required
  • Deep experience in a QA leadership role, with a track record of building and scaling QA practices within a web-based SaaS environment
  • High EQ – a team player that can build great relationships with other teams, communicate with empathy and learn from feedback
  • Strong proficiency in automated testing tools and frameworks (e.g., Cypress, Playwright, Selenium)
  • Deep understanding of software testing methodologies, principles, and best practices
  • Experience with security testing principles and tools
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies (Scrum, Kanban)
  • Proven experience as a people leader (of at least 2 people), preferably in a fast-paced environment
  • Able to work three days a week onsite at our London office #li-hybrid
Nice to have (but not essential)
  • Previous experience with Playwright
  • Familiarity with the AWS Cloud Platform
  • Delivering QA processes to ISO27001, SOC2, or similar standards
  • Knowledge of financial services
  • ISTQB or other relevant testing certifications
  • Educated to Bachelor's or Master's degree level in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
