Join to apply for the Principal Nuclear Graphite Engineer role at Amentum

The successful candidate will help support life extension of the current AGR fleet of nuclear stations and help develop and deliver a strategy for expanding our client base beyond traditional customers. You will be part of the Structural Analysis and Assessment Team, delivering solutions to real problems and meeting UK energy demands and carbon emissions targets.

The team comprises a broad range of engineering and scientific experts spanning mathematics, physics, structural and mechanical engineering, software development, finite-element stress analysis, and structural integrity analysis and assessment. We provide services to a range of customers, mainly in the nuclear industry, to ensure the economic and safe operation of capital‑intensive plant, from both government and private industry. We also participate in national and international projects and work closely with other parts of Amentum to provide integrated client solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical oversight and leadership of several projects relating to nuclear graphite.
  • Discussing and developing bespoke engineering solutions with colleagues and customers.
  • Interfacing with customers throughout the lifecycle of a project.
  • Implementing and further developing the business strategy for expanding the team’s client base.
  • Producing high‑quality technical reports.
  • Checking the work of other team members.
  • Assisting in maintaining and developing the technical capability and knowledge of the team.
  • Representing the business in technical meetings.
  • Liaising with various internal and external stakeholders, including universities, to drive innovation and delivery.

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • Degree in any numerate scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Expert knowledge of nuclear graphite and the effects of irradiation.
  • An interest in business strategy.
  • Confident organisational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Reliable analytical skills, able to interpret results, relate them to the real world and present them clearly to key stakeholders.
  • Ability to write well‑structured reports that present clear arguments.

Desirable but not essential:

  • Experience in writing business proposals and plans.
  • Experience of using FEA software packages, e.g., ABAQUS.
  • Familiarity with prospective new reactor designs
