Principal Materials and Integrity Engineer

Role at QinetiQ Rosyth site. 37 hours per week, hybrid working patterns available.

Overview

Join a well-established maritime defence engineering team of experienced naval architects delivering innovative solutions that enhance vessel performance throughout the lifecycle. The role focuses on testing submarine and surface ship structures to evaluate performance under operational conditions, primarily supporting the Royal Navy. You will lead technical efforts in materials engineering, with expertise in ferrous materials (including welding), material testing and qualification, fatigue and fracture mechanics, and will oversee delivery of key technical outputs, design reports, documents, and approvals of work packages, reports, and drawings.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate engineering activities to deliver technical programmes effectively; apply expert judgement to solve complex problems, manage schedules, and ensure delivery within scope, budget, and quality standards

  • Develop capabilities in your areas of expertise; mentor others to improve knowledge within the wider engineering and technical communities
  • Encourage collaboration across the Group and with wider technical teams; work with other functions to ensure compliance with statutory, regulatory, company, and project processes
  • Develop joint technical approaches with partner organisations to expand value for customers; give technical presentations and speak knowledgeably at external forums, including conferences and customer meetings
  • Ensure projects are conducted safely; highlight hazards, propose options to reduce risk to as low as reasonably practicable
Essential experience
  • Significant experience leading multidisciplinary project teams
  • Substantial experience in maritime structural design to recognised codes of practice
  • Strong communication skills (written, verbal, presentational) for exchanging complex information
  • Good customer and stakeholder management; ability to explain technically complex subjects to non-specialists
Essential qualifications
  • BEng / MEng in Engineering or Materials Science or equivalent engineering experience
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership
