We have several ongoing projects with clients across commercial and naval marine domains and are seeking to expand our Marine Engineering capability. As a Principal Structures Engineer you will lead pre-concept/concept surface & sub-surface vessel design, complex engineering design & analysis tasks, the creation of new tools & processes, the delivery of engineering consultancy services, and the development of new business opportunities, such as decarbonisation solutions and other emerging technologies across global maritime programmes.
Responsibilities
- Apply and continue to develop a breadth of engineering skills in the discipline of Marine Structures and Analysis.
- Lead the development of the Marine Structures & Analysis Function and provide support into resource planning and capability growth to support business needs.
- Lead the development of new business opportunities and generate technical scopes, risk registers and work breakdown structures.
- Lead engineering analyses, technical studies and research & development projects, delivering high quality end-to-end solutions to customers and clients.
- Provide mentoring support, guidance and leadership to aid the development of engineers to grow their technical and behavioural skills, knowledge and experience.
- Investigate and solve complex technical problems in concept, basic and detailed designs.
- Develop and maintain technical procedures, standards, processes, practices, guidelines, and standards.
- Interface directly with customers and clients, representing our teams to discuss and deliver engineering solutions to complex problems.
Qualifications
- Degree qualified in a relevant STEM discipline (e.g., Naval Architecture, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Material Science or Mathematics), or equivalent experience in the naval and commercial ship design, construction, or maintenance domain.
- Professional member of a relevant engineering institution (e.g., RINA, IMarEST, IMechE, IET).
- Recognised as an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer by the UK Engineering Council (or actively working towards achieving accredited status).
Essential Skills
- Experienced in at least one of the following: structural analysis and design (metallic and/or non-metallic); design and assessment for explosive shock survivability; management and assessment of structural defects; materials engineering and testing in the marine environment; whole-ship and system concept design development.
- Experience of linear, non-linear, dynamic and time-domain analysis methodologies, including empirical and Finite Element approaches.
- Experience of using design & analysis software packages (e.g., FORAN, Ship Constructor, TRIBON, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Ansys Structural/Fluent, SESAM, Abaqus CAE/Standard, MATLAB, MathCAD, MS Excel).
- Experience and knowledge of applicable classification society rules, standards & regulations used in maritime structure design (e.g., Lloyd’s Register, Eurocode(s), PD5500, ANEP-77, Maritime Acquisition Publications, Naval Engineering Standards, Defence Standards).
- Willingness to grow and develop technical and behavioural competence to operate at the cutting edge of the discipline.
- Drive to work in a collaborative environment with curiosity and a continuous improvement mindset, challenging oneself and others to find new solutions.
- Proven track record of delivering reliability, productivity and quality in a technical consultancy environment.
- Passion to grow and support others through strong technical leadership and by identifying new opportunities for technical and behavioural development and progression.
Desired Skills
- Understanding of the role of structural engineering throughout all stages of the design lifecycle (CADMID).
- Experience of whole ship design including assessment of performance, design integration, construction, and through-life maintenance.
- Experience of working in multi-company and engineering discipline teams with effective communication.
- Experience in a technical consulting environment, leading or supporting multiple engineering projects and customers.
Experience
- The successful candidate will ideally have a minimum of 10 years post-graduate experience (12 years for non-degree qualified) in the commercial or naval maritime domain.
