About Us

Hoare Lea is a human‑centric and planet‑conscious engineering consultancy. We offer intelligent and sustainable solutions to complex design challenges for the built environment throughout the UK and beyond. We provide a wide range of engineering and consultancy services, including acoustics, air quality, building services (MEP), fire, lighting, security and sustainability. Together, our highly skilled teams bring buildings to life, ensuring outstanding design and operations that meet community needs.

We are committed to an inclusive environment where everyone can realise their unique potential. You will enjoy a 9‑day fortnight scheme, vibrant community groups, social events, and extensive professional and technical development schemes. Our benefits package includes private medical cover, an electric‑vehicle salary sacrifice scheme, stock options and up to 30 days of annual leave.

Hoare Lea’s Fire Engineering group is a leading team of fire safety experts, many of whom are Chartered Engineers through the Institution of Fire Engineers.

We collaborate with top engineers and work on UK’s largest projects, such as Heathrow Terminal 2, Doha’s new metro, Elephant and Castle redevelopment, the ExCeL centre extension and the Royal Hospital for Children and Young Persons in Edinburgh. We have led fire safety design on seven of Manchester’s ten tallest buildings, major airport terminals and two World Cup stadia.

We invest heavily in training and research: computational modelling, emerging fire risks, new techniques, and fire testing. We recently led two of the world’s largest cross‑laminated timber compartment fire tests in France.

Our team offers weekly training sessions, regular training away‑days, innovation days and external training. We actively support Chartered Engineer status through a dedicated programme.

The Role
  • The Fire Engineering team focuses on fire safety design of buildings.
  • Work with colleagues within Hoare Lea as part of a multi‑disciplinary team and with long‑term external clients.
  • Projects are primarily based in the UK, requiring knowledge of UK regulations and design guidance.
  • Appreciate integration of other construction professionals’ requirements.
  • Ensure open communication among all project team members to provide and act on feedback efficiently.
  • Attend design team meetings, workshops, client meetings and site meetings.
  • Travel to UK clients or projects, and occasionally internationally, as needed.
  • Have working knowledge of software analysis tools – evacuation, smoke and fire modelling, heat radiation models and structural fire modelling.
What We Are Looking For
  • Experience in a fire engineering consultancy role.
  • A relevant degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Building Services, Maths, Architecture or Physics, with a keen interest in fire engineering. Significant technical knowledge of fire safety design is required.
  • IT literate with a working understanding of fire modelling software analysis tools.
  • Excellent communication skills and an interest in working in a team environment.
  • Ability and commitment to deliver to demanding timescales, with strong organisational and planning skills.
