Job description

Our Waste and Recycling Service plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and sustainable environment for the city. We are responsible for the collection, transportation, and management of trade waste and recyclable materials from businesses and commercial premises across Cardiff.

The service operates a fleet of specialist vehicles and is supported by a dedicated team of drivers and operatives who ensure that waste is collected efficiently, containers are delivered and maintained, and all operations are carried out in line with environmental regulations and health and safety standards.

We are committed to delivering a high-quality, customer-focused service that supports local businesses, promotes recycling, and contributes to the city’s wider environmental goals. Our team works closely with residents, businesses, and other council departments to ensure Cardiff remains a clean and vibrant place to live and work.

About the job

As a key member of our Waste Management and Recycling Services team, you will play a vital role in supporting Cardiff’s environmental sustainability goals. This hands‑on driving role involves operating a variety of vehicles—including Roll‑on/Roll‑off trucks, lugged skip lorries, refuse/recycling collection vehicles, and transit vans—to facilitate the efficient collection and delivery of waste and recycling containers across the city.

You’ll be responsible for ensuring the safe and timely transport of containers to and from businesses, while maintaining accurate records, completing vehicle checks, and adhering to EU tachograph legislation. Your role will also involve using onboard technology to follow pre‑set routes, report issues such as contamination or missed collections, and provide excellent customer service to commercial clients.

This position requires a strong commitment to health and safety, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. You’ll also be expected to uphold the Council’s policies on equality, wellbeing, and professional conduct, and to participate in ongoing training and development.

You will also be responsible for delivering and collecting waste and recycling containers as required to support daily operations.
