Overview

Midland Mencap is a charity that works to provide accessible and inclusive services and a better quality of life for people with experience of learning disabilities and additional needs. Parkride is an inclusive cycling project that uses adapted and standard bikes to enable anyone, regardless of age, ability, or need, to enjoy outdoor cycling. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who enjoy being active to support our inclusive cycling sessions across the West Midlands.

Responsibilities
  • Support children and adults with learning disabilities and their families/carers to take part in regular community bike rides
  • Lead small cycling trips in suitable areas such as parks
  • Help set up before each session and tidy away afterwards
  • Assist Midland Mencap staff to deliver parkride sessions
  • Help maintain a fleet of bikes to enable as many people as possible to take part
  • Help participants learn the basics of bicycle maintenance
What you need
  • Knowledge and experience of cycling
  • Interest in cycle maintenance is beneficial but not essential
  • Approachable, friendly with good communication skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse group and be accepting of others
  • Willingness to learn and follow Midland Mencap guidelines
  • Honesty, integrity and trustworthy
  • Good time management and reliability

An enhanced DBS check will be required by all successful applicants.

When and where

Volunteer sessions run throughout the week, including evenings and weekends. Each session lasts 2–4 hours. Sessions take place across the Midlands, including Birmingham (all areas), Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell, Coventry, Solihull, and Worcestershire. You can attend sessions in your local area. All sessions are weather dependent and may be canceled only in extreme weather; please bring a warm waterproof coat and suitable shoes.
