Job description
Summary

We are looking for a volunteer to help an adult improve their reading skills through supporting them to learn phonics. Saturday morning is preferred.

Detailed description

We are looking for a volunteer to support an adult with a low level of reading skill or Dyslexia to pursue a structured and guided approach to learning to read. The role is one which will require good interpersonal skills and a will to help support others in a patient and friendly manner.

The person requesting support with their reading has English as a second language. They have a confident level of spoken English but wish to improve their reading skills through following the Norfolk Reading Pathway coaching. We are therefore looking for a volunteer who also has experience of either Teaching ESOL or working with people who have English as a second language.

The reading resources that will be provided to volunteers suggest a period of 6-12 months is spent working with the learner. This may change from person to person depending on their initial reading level and rate of progress but volunteers should be prepared to commit to this timescale as a minimum period they will volunteer.

You will be paired with a learner and the time you meet will be mutually agreed. Sessions will take place weekly and will normally last 1-2 hours. Sometimes they may be shorter depending on the progress of the learner and how much they wish to cover at each session.

The library service will support the volunteer by offering the following:

  • An induction to the role and initial guidance on using the resources
  • Additional materials will be available through libraries which can be used with readers at a range of levels
  • Support from library staff in helping to identify new resources and means of support as the reader progresses
  • Regular catch up meetings for Norfolk Reading Pathway coaches

We would especially be interested in finding a coach who could help on a Saturday but are open to discussion of when sessions take place.
