Role Overview

With two main specialist areas – Structures and Geotechnical, Expanded Ltd provides a total capability in the early construction phases of major projects, providing an end-to-end solution or a bespoke choice of services, backed by a central technical design and engineering resource to deliver programmes for numerous market-leading developments. Expanded Structures is the UK leader in reinforced concrete basement, sub- and superstructure frame construction and is part of the Laing O'Rourke Group. The workload is diverse and brings together key internal business of geotechnical / Explore Manufacturing (Precast) / Vetter (Stone) to offer clients complete solutions. Like the rest of the Laing O'Rourke Group, Expanded is committed to bringing the benefits of a Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) approach. Explore Manufacturing includes Europe's largest off-site pre-cast concrete facility providing modular components with higher levels of repeatability, quality and cost surety. With continuing demand from Laing O'Rourke and the external market the business is seeking to appoint a Managing Estimator who will have responsibility for leading major bids. Recognising the importance of close collaboration with the wider project bid teams this role is office-based as in person touchpoints are critical during technically challenging bids. The role can be based locally to any of the LOR hubs or major projects including the Southeast, Midlands, Manchester or Glasgow, all of which offer great transport links and easy access to the motorway network. The business is willing to consider candidates from anywhere within the UK on an understanding of there being a degree of travel.

Key Responsibilities

• The estimating team operates a fairly flat structure, this is a senior position within the team leading across the bid process on major tenders, or 2-3 smaller bids with the support of other estimators within the function.
• Securing a potentially profitable work stream for the business by ensuring that bids are prepared in a timely manner and meet LOR Group requirements.
• Operating in an efficient manner by utilising appropriate Digital Engineering (DE) tools and Estimating software, promoting consistent practices and using feedback from liv orrecently completed projects as appropriate.
• Engaging all disciplines/functions in the work winning process; Design, Commercial, Engineering, Digital Engineering (DE), Procurement, Transformation & Innovation (R&D),Planning & HS&E.
• Procurement – exposure to various mechanisms for the procurement of projects.
• Coaching, mentoring and development of Apprentices, Cadets and Graduates within the function.

Skills, Knowledge, Attributes

• First Principle estimating – experienced in labour, plant and materials productivity pricing of structural concrete works (Groundworks / Basements / Structures / Highway Structures).
• Previous experience of precast concrete frame solutions (Hollow core / Lattice Planks /Twin walls / PC Columns); and understanding of falsework / formwork / jump form and slip form systems.
• Pricing – expert in establishing a forecast of net prime cost, preliminary costing and cost planning.
• Package management – expert skills in supply chain enquiry generation and management.
• Ability to influence and develop winning strategies for tenders.
• Excellent all-round experience of estimating procedures through the life of an estimate, through until submission, post tender procedure, award and handover to the delivery team.
• Bid Administration – expert in managing the tendering and estimating process.
