Community members of staff also provide care to patients in their homes and from a number of clinics, health centres and GP surgeries.

Job overview

ESHT are pleased to offer an excellent opportunity to gain broad clinical and laboratory Haematology experience as a LAS 3+in a busy but friendly h aematology department.

You will gain lots of haematology experience working alongside 6 haematology consultants, one SAS doctor and 4 haematology clinical nurse specialists.

There is also a team of 3 resident doctors (FY2) covering Haematology inpatients. This post is not recognised for training however provides excellent clinical and laboratory Haematology experience and there are plentiful educational and training opportunities. It would be suitable for doctors wanting a broad experience in Haematology prior to speciality training.

Clinical work includes outpatients, inpatient care including intensive chemotherapy. There will also be opportunity to gain experience in laboratory haematology and bone marrow biopsies..

You will need to be eligible to work in the UK, hold full GMC registration and a license to practise. MRCP preferred and prior Haematology experience or interest preferable.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Patient Care: Provide direct care for patients with haematological disorders in both inpatient wards and outpatient clinics.
  • On-Call Duties: Participate in the on-call rota, managing urgent referrals and acute haematological emergencies.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with consultants, junior doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other allied health professionals to deliver holistic care.

Laboratory & Diagnostic Duties

Interpretation of Results: Assist in the interpretation of blood films, bone marrow aspirates, and other haematological investigations.

Laboratory Support: Provide clinical input to laboratory services, including transfusion medicine and coagulation studies.

Teaching & Training

Junior Doctor Supervision: Support and mentor junior medical staff, including CT2 and foundation doctors.

Medical Education: Contribute to the teaching of medical students, ward nursing teams, and clinical nurse specialists.

Audit, Research & Development

Clinical Audit: Participate in audits to improve service quality and patient outcomes.

Research: Engage in research activities, especially in rapidly evolving areas like malignant haematology .

Special Interests: Opportunity to develop expertise in subspecialties.

  • Experience of haematology
  • Experience as an SpR in haematology would be useful in maximising the opportunities of this post.
