Job description

We tackle the most complex problems in quantitative finance, by bringing scientific clarity to financial complexity.

From our London HQ, we unite world-class researchers and engineers in an environment that values deep exploration and methodical execution - because the best ideas take time to evolve. Together we’re building a world-class platform to amplify our teams’ most powerful ideas.

As part of our engineering team, you’ll shape the platforms and tools that drive high-impact research - designing systems that scale, accelerate discovery and support innovation across the firm.

Take the next step in your career.

The role

As a Linux Engineering Manager, you will lead a team responsible for delivering and maintaining the core Linux operating systems (RHEL and Ubuntu) that power G-Research’s compute platforms.

You will oversee the entire Linux platform stack - from OS builds and provisioning systems, through to database services, custom tooling and observability frameworks. This role requires balancing technical leadership, people management and strategic platform ownership, ensuring that our Linux infrastructure remains consistent, scalable and secure.

You will provide direction on platform architecture, drive adoption of DevOps and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices and partner with cross-functional teams to deliver secure, automated and reliable Linux services across the organisation.

Key responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership & Strategy: Leading, mentoring and growing a team of Linux Engineers, setting technical direction and professional development goals

  • Defining and delivering the Linux strategy, aligned with business and research priorities

  • Fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement

Technical Ownership

  • Overseeing the build, release and maintenance of core Linux OS images (RHEL and Ubuntu)

  • Ensuring provisioning systems and lifecycle management services are reliable, scalable and efficient

  • Guiding development of APIs, databases and package tooling used across the firm

Security & Compliance

  • Driving Linux security initiatives, including baseline hardening, patch pipelines and compliance automation

  • Partnering with security and compliance teams to embed best practices and reduce risk

DevOps & Infrastructure as Code

  • Championing automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices, primarily with Ansible

  • Overseeing integration of CI/CD pipelines and automated release processes

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Acting as the key stakeholder for Linux services, engaging with research, development and infrastructure teams

Observability & Resilience

  • Ensuring robust observability and telemetry for OS health, provisioning and compliance

  • Driving improvements in reliability, performance and scale

Who are we looking for?

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

Leadership

  • Proven experience leading or managing infrastructure or engineering teams

  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills

  • Ability to set direction, balance priorities and foster a high-performing culture

Technical Foundation

  • Deep understanding of Linux systems (RHEL, Ubuntu), with knowledge of internals, such as boot process, kernel, filesystems and package management

  • Experience with kernel optimisation and performance tuning, including scheduler, memory and I/O tuning

  • Knowledge of eBPF for observability, performance analysis and security enforcement

  • Strong background in automation and Infrastructure as Code, for example with Ansible

  • Familiarity with provisioning technologies, such as PXE, kickstart, cloud-init and image management

  • Awareness of Linux security concepts, including hardening, patching and compliance.

  • Knowledge of API-driven services, databases and open-source package tooling

Why should you apply?
  • Highly competitive compensation plus annual discretionary bonus

  • Lunch provided (via Just Eat for Business) and dedicated barista bar

  • 30 days’ annual leave

  • 9% company pension contributions

  • Informal dress code and excellent work/life balance

  • Comprehensive healthcare and life assurance

  • Cycle-to-work scheme

  • Monthly company events
