Overview

Under general supervision, the Senior Power System Study Engineer (PSS Engineer III) will perform a substantive role in advanced power system analysis and modeling, contributing to the success of major utility, industrial, and renewable energy projects. The ideal candidate will be proficient with a range of power system software tools and methodologies, capable of both technical execution and mentorship of junior engineers.

This position can be based anywhere in the USA or Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a good working knowledge of power system planning, design, and operation philosophies including but not limited to:
  • Utility Networked Transmission Systems, or
  • Utility Network and Radial Distribution Systems,
  • And Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional Facilities.
  • Perform power system studies, including:
    • Model performance tuning and benchmarking in PSSE, PSCAD, and PSLF.
    • Steady-State Thermal and Fault Analyses such as Load Flow, Reactive Power, and Short-Circuit.
    • Dynamic Stability Analyses in PSSE, PSLF, and PSCAD.
    • Contingency Analysis in PSSE, PSLF, and TARA.
    • Utility Interconnection Studies (Feasibility, System Impact, and Facility Studies).
    • Electrical Equipment Evaluation.
  • Develop and maintain power system models using tools such as PSS/E, PSLF, TARA, PSCAD, PRSIM, ETAP, and ASPEN.
  • Perform technical evaluations and propose solutions for power system performance issues.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports clearly explaining methodologies, data, results, and recommendations.
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers, promoting technical development within the team.
  • Maintain project documentation, including reports, models, and data backups, following company standards.
  • Stay informed of Department and Company news by attending meetings (in person or via conference call) for the Power System Studies Group (PSS) and Company.
  • Actively participate in client development, communication, and relationship management.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure project timelines and quality standards are met.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, standards, and best practices, including NERC and FERC requirements.
  • Actively participate in the ongoing modernization of study techniques, procedures, and design criteria.
  • Willingness to learn new service offerings as client needs and market requirements change.
Qualifications

  • Possess a four-year Bachelor of Science or Technology degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent amount of experience in the electrical engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in power system planning, operations, or studies with a focus on technical analyses.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred, but not required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with power system software tools: PSS/E, PSLF, TARA, PSCAD, PRSIM, ETAP, and ASPEN.
  • Experience with ISO/RTO operations, including PJM, MISO, ISO-NE, SPP, CAISO, WECC, SERC, ERCOT, and NYISO.
  • Strong understanding of utility-scale renewable energy operations (Wind, Solar, Energy Storage Systems, etc.).
  • Familiarity with NERC compliance and auditing requirements, and regional transmission planning standards.
  • Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences.

Preferred Skills

  • Prior experience with Transmission Planning Studies, Generator Interconnection Support, and Reliability Compliance Studies.
  • Exposure to system analysis topics, such as Steady State, Dynamic Stability, and EMT studies (TRV, TOV, SSR, Harmonics, etc.).
  • Prior experience with NERC compliance and auditing requirements, and regional transmission planning standards.
  • Experience leading multiple concurrent projects and managing deadlines effectively.

  • Compensation: In accordance with local law, the below salary range is applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, geographical location, and other compensable factors.

    Other Compensation: Employee may be eligible for participation in the Company’s annual Discretionary Bonus Program which is contingent on Company, Business Segment, and Individual performance against Key Performance Indicators which vary by year and employee.
