Information About The Role
As a Detective Sergeant within CTPWM, you’ll lead a team of dedicated and highly trained investigators reporting to the Senior Investigating Officer. You’ll be responsible for overseeing and directing the gathering and developing of intelligence in line with the National Intelligence Model, together with gathering evidence in relation to investigations into criminal and extremist behaviour/activities and terrorism related offences. This includes participating in oversight and direction of arrests, interviews and processing of suspects in accordance with the relevant criminal legislation.

Management of TACT convicted offenders and those posing a terrorist risk is also a key part of this role. You will work closely with the National Security Division (NSD) and Joint Extremism Unit (JExU) in order to manage licence conditions and Part 4 notification requirements. You will effectively manage the risk these nominals pose, as well as rehabilitating them back into the community with a view to reducing their risk of re offending.

It is essential that you are a substantive Detective Sergeant possessing proven investigatory experience in serious and complex investigations and evidence of strong leadership qualities.

You’ll be based at our modern offices near to Birmingham Airport. Shift work and bank holiday working is a requirement of this role. A willingness to be flexible and travel at short notice is also required, as well as covering an on‑call function.

Responsibilities
  • Manage National Security investigations in a high profile and emotive environment in a manner that enhances trust and confidence.
  • Where appropriate, develop investigations from covert into overt case building, working with partners, CPS and others to bring cases before the courts in a highly professional manner.
  • Manage highly sensitive material including covert, intelligence and investigative product.
  • Utilise financial investigators to disrupt terrorist activity.
  • Influence the development of staff and the department in line with the values of West Midlands Police.
  • Demonstrate strong and visible leadership. Lead by example and behave in line with the Police Code of Ethics, ensuring that the force values and behavioural expectations are clearly understood and considered by officers and staff in their decision making and actions; reinforcing and influencing them through all interactions and processes.
  • Proactively manage the performance, attendance and wellbeing of police officers and police staff against the required standards to ensure they are dealt with and supported in accordance with the correct policies and procedures.
  • Supervising and evaluating the intelligence flow relating to regionally‑managed nominals and in collaboration with the Security Service employ effective responses and strategies to manage risk.
  • Enhance and develop collaborative partnership with statutory and non‑statutory partners.
  • Conduct assessments and reviews of CTP regional selected nominals through informed intelligence collection in compliance with relevant legislation and policy and ensure effective management.
  • Conduct intelligence‑driven briefings, tasking and debriefings to ensure all team members have a clear understanding of their role, priorities and current CT issues.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the role and rank as directed by the SIO.
