Company: National Gas

About us

National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.

About the role

We’re looking for an experienced instrumentation, control, and automation (ICA) Cyber Technician to join our West 4 Operations Team, supporting the security and resilience of the National Gas Transmission System across the South West of England. This is not a typical IT or corporate cyber role. This is a hands‑on position working directly with Operational Technology (OT) assets that underpin the UK’s gas infrastructure.

You’ll be part of a team maintaining critical systems such as control systems, industrial PCs, firewalls, and managed switches across a variety of operational sites, from major gas terminals to smaller Above Ground Installations (AGI's). Your work will directly contribute to the cyber resilience of our gas operations, ensuring that essential infrastructure remains secure, compliant, and operational.

What you’ll be doing

  • Placing health and safety first. Demonstrating safe working practices to keep yourself, visitors, contractors, and your team safe during day‑to‑day operations.
  • You will be a subject matter expert, bringing specialist technical knowledge and experience into the day‑to‑day operations within the West 4 area – Wormington, Broadway to Milford Haven.
  • You will work with the planning team to organise your time effectively, prioritise and de‑conflict routine maintenance, investigations, and manage defects.
  • Complete routine maintenance of ICA/Cyber assets across operational gas sites.
  • Although reporting into the area operations team, you will work closely with the central security team to ensure compliance and readiness, and may be required to support other teams/areas. You will also support with assurance visits and work with the wider central team to upgrade assets.
  • Facilitate cyber assurance visits and supporting site access for upgrade projects.
  • Respond and support with asset failures and fault investigation, where necessary engaging with third‑party contractors.
  • Protect our assets from cyber threats, and maintain business continuity cyber through the configuration and backup of OT, maintenance of asset data and credentials, completing malware sweeps, and carrying out upgrades to meet vulnerability‑management requirements.
  • Where necessary, you will support with capital project delivery and installation of new OT/Cyber assets and the secure disposal of retired OT assets.
  • Once the required business training has been completed, you will take part in a one‑in‑four stand‑by. You will receive additional remuneration when on the rota.
About you

You’ll be a practical problem‑solver with a methodical approach to your work and a strong sense of ownership. You’ll be confident working independently and as part of a team, with the ability to organise, prioritise, and manage tasks effectively. Your attention to detail and analytical mindset will help you navigate challenges and contribute to the smooth running of operational environments. You’ll bring a proactive attitude, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to maintaining high standards in everything you do.
