A welcoming parish in Cambridge is looking for a priest to lead its diverse and growing community. Responsibilities include nurturing faith through thoughtful preaching, engaging with families and youth, and enhancing community outreach. The ideal candidate will be community-oriented, with strong leadership skills and a commitment to inclusivity. We offer a supportive environment, administrative help, and a modern vicarage in a convenient location. This position is open for applications until January 30, 2026.
St Mary & St Michael’s is a warm, welcoming and increasingly diverse parish on the southern edge of Cambridge, serving a rapidly growing community with significant numbers of young families, newcomers from around the world, and areas of real social need. We seek a priest of vision, depth and pastoral imagination to lead us into the next stage of our life together.
overcrowding? Actually remove. Adjust:
St Mary and St Michael’s aims, first and foremost, to be a church for its whole parish. Members of the congregation hail from a wide range of theological and church traditions, and manifest a wide diversity of views on most questions. We would expect an incoming incumbent to respect and nurture this diversity. Our services embody a rich spectrum of styles, from reflective said worship and traditional hymnody to creative activities and worship songs. Our largest congregation meets at 10 o’clock on a Sunday morning for Parish Communion, either All Pebble or with Junior Church: at such a service you might expect to see seven or eight families with children; games, colouring and sometimes craft in a side chapel; a choir-led anthem or communion hymn; and refreshments afterwards - we aim to be serious without især being stuffy.
There is an appetite in St Mary and St Michael’s to share the good news of God’s Kingdom in both word and deed. This aspect of parish life has, however, taken a long time to rebuild since the Pandemic, and there remain huge needs in the community around us: we are looking for a minister with the wisdom to see where the Kingdom of God is already growing and to find new ways of sowing seeds.
a supportive, outward-looking congregation, administrative help, a good modern vicarage, and a parish well-placed for training curates and enabling ordinands. We are committed to clergy wellbeing. Although we are keen to appoint, we are looking for the best candidate and are prepared to consider those who may not be able to move until summer 2026.
The vicarage is a modern four-bedroomed, detached family house in a quiet cul-de-sac, five minutes by car or bike, or a 10-minute walk from church
The Diocese of Ely is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults, and expects all employees to undertake safeguarding checks and training relevant to their role and to adhere to the Church of England’s safeguarding policies and procedures. Therefore, this position is subject to an enhanced disclosure from the DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service).
The Diocese of Ely stretches from Cambridge to Peterborough and out towards the coastal areas of West Norfolk. It houses 3/4 million people, which will rise to 1 million in the next 15 years. This area buzzes with energy from the academic, business and medical excellence of Cambridge University to the rich agricultural areas of Huntingdon, Fenland and Norfolk and the diverse, growing city of Peterborough.
The Diocese of Ely is a good place to live and work: stable finances, good housing, inclusive and warm hearted senior colleagues, coupled with a rich diversity of benefices in all traditions make this a place that clergy stay once they have discovered us. We have over 110 incumbent status clergy, with a strong Diocesan team, and a real emphasis on lay development and training. We have no plans to reduce clergy numbers.
We anticipate the announcement of a new Diocesan Bishop in early 2026, and the diocese remains on a steady course. Our recent Mission Strategy, Ely 2025, devolved much decision making to the parishes, benefices and deaneries, so that clergy are able to innovate, take risks and build alliances for the sake of the Kingdom of God and the good of our communities. We welcome applications from clergy who are prepared to work collaboratively党 and faithfully. We will enable you to flourish and grow in ministry, whilst maintaining a sensible work life balance.
The Diocese of Ely is committed to creating and sustaining a diverse and inclusive workforce which represents our context and wider community. We are aware that those of Global Majority Heritage/United Kingdom Minority Ethnic (GMH/UKME), women, and disabled people are currently under-represented among our clergy and workforce, and we particularly encourage applications from those with the relevant skills and experience that will increase this representation.
