Hydraulic Modellers (Flood Risk Management) – Jacobs, Birmingham, England, United Kingdom

Jacobs is globally recognised for solving critical problems in water infrastructure. We are expanding our Water Catchment Management business and seek experienced Hydraulic Modellers to join our UK team, working on high‑profile flood risk programmes for leading water companies.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, calibrate, and interpret 1D and 1D/2D hydraulic models using Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, InfoWorks, HEC‑RAS.
  • Analyse and manage GIS data (ArcGIS, MapInfo, QGIS) and apply analytical tools (R, Python) to support modelling work.
  • Challenge assumptions and contribute innovative ideas to improve solutions for clients.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver client outcomes and ensure technical excellence.
  • Write, review, and validate complex technical reports and deliverables.
  • Mentor colleagues and support professional development within the team.
  • Peer‑review calculations and technical deliverables to maintain high quality standards.
Qualifications
  • Degree (MEng/MSc) in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Geography, Mathematics or a closely related discipline.
  • Professional registration or pursuit of chartered status with ICE or CIWEM preferred.
  • Experience implementing 1D and 2D modelling for river, urban, and coastal flooding applications.
  • Proficient in industry standard software – Flood Modeller, TUFLOW (including InfoWorks ICM) – for model development, calibration, and interrogation.
  • Demonstrated technical assurance of modelling outputs and hydrological calculations.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with GIS and scripting (R, Python).
  • Ability to mentor peers and contribute to team growth and development.
