Overview

Highways Maintenance Drainage Apprentice

We're looking for a Highways Maintenance Drainage Apprentice to join our Transportation Team based in Birmingham, working towards a Level 2 apprenticeship in Highways Maintenance.

Transportation - Build and maintain infrastructure for the highways, rail, aviation and ports sectors, with a common goal of connecting people. We provide transport solutions that are sustainable, long-lasting and that promote various methods of transport.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a leading construction and infrastructure services company on an apprenticeship. Whilst working towards a recognised qualification, you'll be able to put your learnings into practice in your day-to-day role, helping you progress within your chosen career.

Location: Thimble Mill Lane Depot, Birmingham

Hours: 40 hours per week

Salary: £20,800

Start Date: September 2026

How does an apprenticeship work?

As a Highways Maintenance Drainage Apprentice you'll be enrolled onto a Level 2 apprenticeship in Highways Maintenance, giving you the opportunity to earn whilst you learn. You'll work closely with the Transportation team to support in the overall design, build and maintenance of infrastructure for highways with a common goal of connecting people.

Responsibilities
  • Provide reactive maintenance duties to ensure that the network is kept accessible to all users.
  • Carry out ironwork repairs, damaged pipework repair, new drainage installations, subsidence, gully cleaning and high pressure water jetting.
  • Assess traffic management requirements, installation and maintenance of traffic management.
  • Ensure Kier's 10 steps to safe digging, red zone, permit to break ground and all PPE, health and safety and codes of conduct are followed.

  • Have GCSEs at grades 3–9 (GCSE D or above) including Maths and English OR Functional Skills level 1 in English and Maths

  • Have the ability to handle physical work in varying weather conditions
  • Have the ability to work collaboratively with a team
