Overview

Are you looking for the opportunity to make a real impact in a global finance transformation? At SmartestEnergy, we’re building a world-class Finance function with scalable processes, strong controls, and a focus on driving performance.

We are seeking a Group Technical Accounting Lead who will be a pivotal senior leader at the heart of this change. You’ll be the go-to expert for technical accounting across the business, with a focus on fair value accounting under IFRS 9, the implementation of new IFRS standards, and ensuring compliance with evolving Companies House regulations.

This is a high-visibility role where you’ll work closely with Finance leadership and business units worldwide, shaping and formalising accounting policies into a comprehensive group accounting manual. You’ll have the autonomy to set best practice standards across multiple geographies, while reporting directly to the Group Financial Controller within the Financial Reporting and Control department.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical accounting leadership and act as the go-to expert for IFRS-related matters across the group.
  • Lead the interpretation and application of IFRS standards (IFRS 9, IFRS 16, IFRS 15, IFRS 13) and support policy development across different jurisdictions (US and AUS).
  • Contribute to the development of the group accounting manual and formalise accounting policies.
  • Assess and implement changes in IFRS standards and ensure compliance with evolving regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with Global Finance leadership and business units to ensure accurate financial reporting and controls.
Qualifications
  • Trained in a main consultancy/advisory firm.
  • Experience either in senior advisory roles in a consultancy/advisory firm in the energy/trading sector or in-house in an energy or trading firm.
  • Experience of policy review/application in different jurisdictions (US and AUS).
  • Experience with key IFRS standards – IFRS 16, IFRS 15, IFRS 9, and IFRS 13.
  • In-depth knowledge of IFRS 9 accounting for derivatives and the own-use exemption.
  • Expertise in the valuation of complex financial instruments under IFRS 13.
