What is the role?

The Group Financial Crime Manager is responsible for supporting with the enhancement, delivery and implementation of the financial crime framework and controls across the Howden Group. The role holder will support the Group Financial Crime Team in providing SME support across a range of financial crime subjects (including ABC, AML, Fraud and Economic Sanctions) to the group’s entities worldwide, and oversee implementation of Group financial crime policies and the associated framework.

What will you be doing?

Planning and Strategy:

  • Act as a business partner providing support and advice to divisional and local management teams to deliver the Group’s strategy for sanctions and financial crime.
  • Support the Group Financial Crime Director and Group Head of Financial Crime in preparing materials for governance, including the annual financial crime plan and updates.
  • Deliver high quality commercial advice to the business in relation to financial crime and all relevant matters that reduce risk, resolve issues, and maximise opportunity.
  • Analyse and interpret issues in a timely fashion and advise the business on how best to incorporate them in its operations.

People Management/Personal Development:

  • Actively pursue personal development to maintain up‑to‑date knowledge and best‑practice understanding.
  • Manage workload proactively and support the central Financial Crime team and stakeholders in meeting agreed deadlines.
  • Encourage essential behaviours and maintain high personal and professional confidence.

Governance, Monitoring & Reporting:

  • Partner with regional and local management to deliver and advise on Groupwide initiatives.
  • Assist in collating MI on design and delivery of Groupwide initiatives for the risk committee.
  • Support preparation and annual review of Groupwide financial crime policies.
  • Perform second‑line assessments of financial crime arrangements at local and regional levels, providing improvement recommendations.
  • Assist local management in addressing second‑ or third‑line findings.
  • Support record‑keeping and filing of internal/external reports.
  • Respond to suspicious transactions/alerts, notifying senior management and external bodies such as the NCA where required.
  • Perform horizon scanning for relevant financial crime matters.

Key Regulatory Responsibilities:

  • Support management of financial crime projects for the Group.
  • Assist divisions in investigating live financial crime issues.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Manage assigned projects and contribute to others as required.
  • Respond appropriately to urgent issues.
  • Support the Team in identifying trends and Group requirements for advice and guidance.
  • Review internal controls and implement improvements as needed.

What are we looking for?

  • Solid experience in financial crime roles, focusing on 2nd‑line advisory.
  • Direct experience in ABC, sanctions, fraud or AML frameworks, ideally in insurance.
  • Experience designing and implementing internal and external financial crime controls.
  • Experience performing enterprise‑wide risk assessments.
  • Understanding of insurance business models (retail/wholesale/reinsurance).
  • Ideally experience in a UK and/or US listed environment.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Active listener who can build relationships and challenge where needed.
  • Ability to diagnose problems quickly and anticipate potential issues.
  • A team player who contributes to the successful functioning of the Group Financial Crime Team.
