Job description
Expert Advisor - Quantity Surveyor

Battersea Old Windsor, England, United Kingdom

Battersea is one of the oldest and best‑known charities in the world. Our Founder, Mary Tealby, was a pioneer of animal welfare and rescue when she set up Battersea in 1860. Her mission is to never turn away an animal in need of our help, a promise Battersea keeps to this day. Every year we help around 5,000 dogs and cats across our three centres in London, Old Windsor and Brands Hatch, and tens of thousands more beyond our gates.

About the role

We are looking for an Expert Advisor to join the Governance Group that will oversee the build of a purpose built new Cattery facility at our Battersea Old Windsor. The new building of 500‑600m2 will replace our existing Cattery facility, offering improved customer experience and much needed additional space and facilities for our animals, staff and volunteers.

This is a voluntary position but is not a trustee role and so has no associated liabilities. You will need to be available to attend bi‑monthly governance group meetings, and there may also be ad‑hoc requests for additional support and input, particularly around key decision‑making points in the strategy planning and implementation of the cattery build. The majority of these meetings will be online, with occasional site visits to Battersea Old Windsor.

Key responsibilities
  • Review proposals and business cases for alignment with goals, feasibility, risks, and impact.
  • Assess tenders and contractor selection for the Capital Build programme.
  • Monitor project timelines and budgets, contributing solutions as needed.
  • Provide constructive feedback on proposals and challenge risks and mitigations.
Required qualifications
  • Substantial practical experience as a Quantity Surveyor.
  • Significant experience working on large‑scale, complex projects.
  • Experience providing cost management services for all stages of a project — from inception through to design and build.
  • Up‑to‑date technical knowledge of Health & Safety legislation.
  • Effective relationship management, site surveying and inspection, and project governance skills.
  • Experience in preparation of tenders and contractor selection.
  • Experience in identifying and evaluating financial risks and changes in projects.
  • Experience providing financial and procurement advice to clients and project stakeholders.

We are looking for a RICS Chartered Quantity Surveyor to join this group.
