Overview
Engineering Manager. Location – Leeds. Hybrid - 2 days per week. FTC - 12 months. The Engineering Manager is accountable for a Software Engineering delivery team and its software delivery. You will lead a team of 5 software engineers and 1 QA engineer to deliver value to our customers. You and your team will be working as part of a multi-team, multi-location environment to evolve the gbp platform to become a world-class sports betting platform to power the Flutter Group to innovate and differentiate the customer experience across multiple brands. Using lean and agile methodologies, you will be responsible for the pace, scale, and performance of your team’s delivery. A technical background with experience in all aspects of software engineering processes, from inception to release, will set you up for success.
You will also be accountable for hiring, performance appraisal, and reward of your team, focusing on helping your people define their career path and goals for the short and long term. Your exceptional communication skills will be key to leading your team in a constantly evolving environment and in interactions with a diverse group of stakeholders.
What You’ll Do
- Leadership & People: Lead, inspire, empower and line manage a multi-disciplinary software development team.
- Coach, hold 1 to 1s, set and review objectives, appraise performance, and assist with career development, ensuring effective performance management.
- Lead a delivery approach that is outcome oriented, high-quality and accountable.
- Ensure engagement and retention of team members.
- Meet ambitious timelines while balancing business risks and trade-offs.
- Drive the team to continuously improve processes in a changing environment.
- Maintain employee motivation and strong management to retain staff.
- Software Delivery: Actively work with peer Engineering Managers to align delivery initiatives, clarify dependencies, and optimize progress toward common goals.
- Identify risks early and provide mitigations to ensure effective delivery.
- Understand dependencies between components and how they combine to deliver value to end users and the business.
- Apply Agile/Lean methodologies (e.g., Scrum) to continuously improve pace, efficiency, and quality.
- Serve as liaison between the delivery team and key stakeholders.
- Plan and lead changes to meet evolving needs and requirements.
- Review product requirements within the team and communicate feedback to product stakeholders.
- Provide technical direction for design, development, testing, and deployment from definition through maintenance.
- Balance commercial needs against technical requirements and capabilities.
- Identify system deficiencies and drive effective solutions.
- Drive continuous improvement of processes through automation and standards.
- Prioritize tasks across all phases of the project lifecycle.
- Measure and review velocity, quality, and delivery duration; take corrective action as needed.
- Ownership: Own products and components with accountability for efficient, effective, high-quality implementation of the roadmap.
- Collaborate with key customers, stakeholders, and external partners across Group Technology.
- Ensure software and system components are supported to appropriate quality standards.
- Communicate and promote strategies, roadmaps, dependencies, and plans for products/components.
- Manage technical resources and capacity planning within budget and schedule.
What You’ll Need
- Consistent track record of leading and running multi-disciplinary teams on sophisticated software projects.
- Experience using Agile methods for software delivery.
- Experience with distributed, redundant, and transactional systems and quality assurance of these systems.
- Experience managing team development by aligning tasks with each member’s career path; strong analytical and diagnostic skills for technical risks and constraints.
- Proven project management experience.
- Release management experience.
- Background in Continuous Integration/Delivery environments.
- Background in DevOps culture.
- Experience working with Cloud Infrastructures.
- Consistent track record of Incident Management.
