Job summary

A national road management authority based in Penrith is seeking a talented Engineer to join their Roads Asset Engineering Team. In this role, you will lead the design and execution of various pavement, vehicle restraint, and road sign renewal projects. You will collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure the strategic road network remains safe and efficient. The ideal candidate will have a relevant degree or HND, knowledge of DMRB standards, and experience in highway infrastructure design. A driving license is required.

Job description

National Highways are looking for a talented Engineer to become a key player in our Roads Asset Engineering Team, part of the Operations Directorate in the North West. In this role, you'll collaborate with a skilled group of professionals to lead the design and execution of diverse Pavement, Vehicle Restraint System, Fencing, Road Marking and Traffic Sign renewal projects. Your work will directly contribute to maintaining and enhancing the strategic road network (SRN), ensuring it remains safe, efficient, and responsive to the evolving needs of our customers-today and for years to come.

Throughout the planning and development stage of a project, you will support with the activities and resources involved in the identification and development of early solutions for the pavement asset. Working with key stakeholders including project teams and third parties you will help coordinate works across the region, providing technical support and ensuring adherence to our defined asset class strategies, policies and standards

As a flexible working organisation we offer this role from our Penrith, Preston, Manchester and Warrington office. There will be a requirement to travel between our offices, the network and those of our stakeholders and partners. Please note that the role may also require work during unsociable hours.

You will be required to drive as part of your role and you will need to have a full driving licence, with no more than 3 points, to be considered for this position.

  • Ensure the health and safety needs and wellbeing of customers and employees are fully considered and accounted for throughout the planning and delivery of each service activity.
  • Provide support in the identification and management of asset studies and survey works, including prioritisation of needs to ensure assets remain in serviceable condition and meet the requirements of our standards.
  • Conduct and lead the development of early solutions for renewals and/or improvements, including the compiling and checking of relevant documents, evidence and options for value management, considering new techniques, materials, buildability, and costs.
  • Develop the technical briefs provided to the design and construction contractor for improvement and renewals work. kwani
  • To provide technical support to Project Managers by assisting with materials approvals, vetting of contractors' compliance, inspection support on site, and reviewing of Health and Safety Files.
