Job summary

A leading construction firm in Central London seeks a Design Director to lead the design delivery process on major projects. You will manage relationships with consultant designers and ensure compliance with regulations. The ideal candidate has experience in a senior leadership role, delivering projects from £50m+, and possesses knowledge of various contract forms, including NEC3 & 4. Job description

We are looking for a Design Director to join our Building team in Central London.

Working as a Design Project Director you will lead the design delivery process, design management team and multi‑disciplinary design team on a major project (or portfolio of projects), from initial enquiry, through tender and bid submission, pre‑construction construction and handover phases.

What you'll do:
  • Lead, complete and maintain the Project Execution Plan (design) and Design Management Plan for the project.
  • Lead and manage relationships with Principals from the Consultant Designers.
  • Member of the Project Leadership Team meetings.
  • Lead and manage the completion of design related elements within the Client Monthly Report as well as internal Governance and Project Controls reporting.
  • Ensure the design team scope and appointment documents are complete.
  • Lead and manage the design and procurement programme with the planning team and commercial team and/or with the support of third party consultants in line with Project/ Design Controls and Governance requirements.
  • Ensure Statutory Responsibilities (including building Control, Planning and Building Safety Act) are clearly set out, understood and managed.
  • Ensure CDM (Health and Safety) and CDM (Building Safety Act) responsibilities are clearly set out, understood and managed.
  • Ensure all Information Control procedures for the CDE are implemented and maintained in line with the Operating Unit protocol.
What you'll bring to the role:
  • Member of professional institution (RIBA, ICE, MCIOB) would be desirable
  • Experience in senior leadership role and in leading teams on a wide range of project types, including hospitals, defence, commercial, data centres and other technical buildings.
  • Experience of delivering construction projects (£50m-£200m+) in a relevant building type working through bid, PCSA and delivery stages, and successfully converting and delivering on quality, time and to budget.
  • Demonstrable experience of varied forms of contract including specifically NEC3 & 4.
  • Knowledge and experience of managing design and working within a secure UK environment.
  • Experienced in use of digital technologies to deliver design (e.g. CDE, BIM, Cobie and design co‑ordination software) and experience of delivering to the ISO19650 Information Management standard.
  • Experience and working knowledge in use of CDM Regulations and the Principal Designer duties.
  • Experience and knowledge of Building Safety Act and Principal Designer duties.
