Qualifications

Overview

Data Engineer position with the Metropolitan Police. This role involves building data pipelines, enabling analytics and operational decisions, and transitioning to Microsoft Azure in a high-stakes, high-impact environment.

Base pay range

The salary and allowances are as stated by the employer. The starting salary is £53,459, including allowances totalling £2,928. The breakdown is £50,531 basic salary, with annual increases up to £55,103, plus a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Location

This role can be based in Sidcup, Hendon, Bow or Lambeth with some travel across the Met estate. Hybrid pattern with 3 days in the office.

Security Clearance

This post requires access to sensitive intelligence material on a daily basis. Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo National Security Vetting (NSV) Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e)) before taking up the post.

You’ll work with Azure Data Factory, Data Bricks, SQL Server, Python, Alteryx, and FME to deliver scalable, high-quality data solutions.

What you’ll be doing
  • Design, build, and maintain robust data pipelines for analytics and operational use
  • Optimize databases and implement data validation and cleansing processes
  • Collaborate with analysts, scientists, and stakeholders to deliver data-driven solutions
  • Support junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement
  • Help transition data infrastructure to Microsoft Azure
  • Occasionally support operational policing through overtime
What you’ll need to succeed

We’re looking for people who know how to get things done and keep learning. If you have a STEM degree, great. If not, hands-on experience in data engineering or information systems is acceptable.

  • Strong SQL skills: queries, stored procedures, and database design
  • Experience with ETL tools like Alteryx, SSIS, FME or Python
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure Data Factory or Data Bricks
  • Understanding of relational databases and data warehouses
  • Ability to work independently and troubleshoot
  • Experience with scripting and automation (batch or PowerShell)
  • Ability to explain technical ideas clearly
  • Self-motivated, detail-focused, and process-improving mindset
