Consultant Psychiatrist – Older People Mental Health – NHS Ayrshire & Arran

Overview

This 10‑PRA position involves comprehensive psychiatric care for patients over 65 years old, recruited through GP practices in Greenock, Port Glasgow and Kilmacolm. Work takes place in the Eastern Inverclyde Health and Social Care Partnership area (population ~8,500) and includes outpatient and inpatient duties. The role is based largely at the Larkfield Unit, Inverclyde Royal Hospital, with strong links to the integrated Community Mental Health Team at Crown House, Greenock.

Shift Pattern

Monday‑Friday 9:00–17:00, plus on‑call rota (1 in 25 non‑resident). Flexible and less‑than‑full‑time options may be considered.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver comprehensive psychiatric assessment, management and treatment for older adults (inpatient and outpatient).
  • Provide clinical leadership to multidisciplinary teams in both community and hospital settings.
  • Participate in regular case discussions, senior clinician meetings and management reviews.
  • Support the local Community Mental Health Team, collaborating with social workers, mental‑health officers and allied health professionals.
  • Engage with teaching activities for medical students from Glasgow University.
  • Possibly contribute to research and clinical audit projects within the service.
  • Attend and lead clinical case conferences and training sessions.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Full GMC registration and license to practise.
  • Eligible for the Specialist Register (CCT or CESR).
  • Experience or eligibility to act as RMO and AMP under the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003.
  • Recognition of trainer status is expected; trainees (OPMH Inverclyde) are frequently appointed.
  • Open to clinicians seeking higher trainer status with support.
  • Background in older people psychiatry and experience with integrated care models is desirable.
