Consultant Psychiatrist HMP Guys Marsh & HMP Erlestoke

Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a Consultant Psychiatrist to work across HMP Erlestoke and HMP Guys Marsh. This is a newly created post funded to expand our prison portfolio. The role involves clinical leadership, assessment, management of psychiatric conditions, work with trauma and substance misuse services, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

Job Summary

The post will be split across the two category C prisons: 2 days at HMP Erlestoke and 2 days at HMP Guys Marsh (with flexibility for part‑time scheduling). The successful candidate will hold a 2.5 SPA to support professional activities such as teaching, training, clinical governance and service development.

Responsibilities
  • Provide medical leadership to the mental health in‑reach teams at each site.
  • Assess and manage prisoners with chronic psychotic illness, mood disorders, ADHD and other conditions, including pharmacological interventions.
  • Support trauma‑informed care models and collaborate with psychology and substance misuse teams.
  • Maintain Section 12(2) approval for Mental Health Act assessments and facilitate transfers under the Act.
  • Lead or actively participate in MDT meetings and formulate individualised care plans.
  • Coordinate with external services for CPAs, after‑care plans, and hospital transfers (including Mappa, police, probation).
  • Participate in clinical governance, audits, advisory committees and trustwide committees.
  • Ensure continuing professional development, registration with the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and meet Good Psychiatric Practice and Good Medical Practice standards.
Qualifications
  • GMC registered.
  • AC status (Achieved Clinical Leadership, Accreditation or equivalent).
  • Relevant experience in forensic psychiatry, general adult psychiatry, learning disability psychiatry, or addictions psychiatry.
  • Ability to secure an inclusion in the specialist register if applicable.
  • Experience working in a prison or secure hospital setting is desirable.
  • Strong clinical, organisational and communication skills.
