Weare seeking a passionate and skilled Consultant Urologist to join ourinnovative and high-performing team at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHSFoundation Trust. This substantive Post focuses on Endo-Urology and generalUrology services, supporting key service areas including:

Stonedisease management.

MaleLUTS, including HoLEP and ThuLEP.

Potentialinvolvement in female, functional, or reconstructive Urology, depending on your subspecialty interests.

Contributionto 2WW and routine outpatient clinic capacity.

Thisrole offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the stone service atSTSFT and develop a subspecialty interest aligned with departmental needs. Youwill join a dynamic team delivering a mix of theatre lists, outpatient clinics,flexible cystoscopy sessions, and active participation in the weekly UrologyCancer MDT.

You Will be supported through tailored in-house mentoring,particularly in subspecialty areas such as HoLEP, stone surgery, orreconstructive Urology, depending on experience and interest.

Ourdepartment serves a population of over 900,000 across the North East and is adesignated Urology Cancer Centre, offering advanced procedures includingrobotic surgery, cryotherapy, and reconstructive techniques.

Main duties of the job

This Post focuses on Endo-Urologyand general Urology services. You will join a skilled teamof surgeons and nurses. Key responsibilities include:

Providespecialist Endo-Urology care, including support for the stone service.

Performmale LUTS procedures such as HoLEP and ThuLEP.

Delivergeneral Urology services, including 2WW and routine outpatient clinics.

Contributeto subspecialty areas (e.g. female, functional, or reconstructive Urology)based on expertise.

Supportreduction in waiting times and improve access to Urology services.

Engage in service development, teaching, andsupervision of junior staff.

You willwork alongside 15 Consultant Urologists across the Directorate, supportingoutpatient, diagnostic, day case, and inpatient services. Clinics are held atSunderland, Durham, and South Tyneside. The on-call rota is 1:12.

The role includes teaching and training at alllevels, contributing to audit and research programmes, and promoting team-basedpractice and innovation. You are expected to support nationalaudits, recruit to clinical trials, and publish surgical outcomes. You willalso play a key role in shaping service development and enhancing patientpathways through collaborative working and evidence-based practice.

Job responsibilities

You will join the existing team of consultants and will participate in the on-call rota.

Overall responsibilities include the co-ordination and delivery of the strategic and operational aspects of the Urology Services across Sunderland and South Tyneside and the wider sub-regional catchment area. These will reflect National and local priorities including the strategic direction of STSFT and the Directorate of Urology.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Primary medical qualification.
  • Full GMC registration.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within six months of the date of the AAC [there is flexibility with the six-month period with Executive Medical Director approval].
  • Higher professional Degree, MD, PhD or equivalent.
Experience
  • Full general ENT surgical training with experience of general Urology with sub-specialty expertise in prostate and bladder.
  • Understanding of the NHS, Clinical Governance process and resource issues.
  • Evidence of organisational, management and time-management skills.
  • Fellowship in the area of subspeciality interest.
  • Evidence of management and administration experience and understanding management goals.
  • Management Course and / or Certificate.
