Consultant in Restorative Dentistry
NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the regional specialist care provider for south west London, Surrey and beyond. The trust provides a high quality, comprehensive range of health services from leading edge tertiary and trauma care to community services.

With national and regional referrals added to our local 3.5m catchment, we serve a population of around 5m.

Co‑located with St George’s, University of London and with both organisations now in a formal strategic alliance with King’s Health Partners, the trust delivers with its partners high quality research and education both of which contribute to the healthcare provision of tomorrow.

Acute and tertiary health services are delivered from over 1,000 beds across two sites, by around 8,000 staff.

St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a major acute hospital that offers very specialist care for complex injuries and illnesses, including trauma, neurology, cardiac care, renal transplantation, cancer care and stroke. It has a helipad which opened in spring 2014 and the work of its emergency department can currently be seen on Channel 4’s ‘24 Hours in A&E’ programme. The hospital also provides all the usual care you would expect from a local NHS district general hospital.

We also provide services at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehampton. These include outpatient rapid diagnostic and treatment facilities, a minor injuries unit, limb fitting services and 70 elderly, intermediate care and rehabilitation beds.

As well as hospital services, we provide a wide variety of specialist, maternity and community services to children, adults, older people and people with learning disabilities. These services are provided from St John’s Therapy Centre, 11 health centres and clinics, schools, nursing homes and people’s own homes. The trust also manages the healthcare service at HMP Wandsworth.

Job overview

The Restorative Dental Department at St George’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a full time (10 PAs) Consultant in Restorative Dentistry to join our friendly, progressive and collaborative multidisciplinary dental team.

This is a 1 WTE post and is subject to the Terms and Conditions of service governing the appointment of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff in England and Wales, or as subsequently varied by agreement. The priority of the role is to support and continue to develop the Restorative Dental service at St George’s Hospital.

Applicants must be fully registered with the GDC, on the GDC Specialist Register in Restorative Dentistry, or must be accredited or be within 6 months of such accreditation at interview stage and have completed a SAC approved training programme.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to provide assessments and treatment for Hospital‑priority patients, ranging from some medically compromised patients requiring simple restorative care, to others will require complex restorative care. There will be access to modern equipment (operating microscopes, rotary endodontic instruments, articulators, sandblasters etc).

Dedicated nursing, administrative and secretarial support will be available. There are also specific new patient clinics for the dental assessment and treatment planning prior to stem cell transplants, IV bisphosphonates from other oncology teams within the hospital as well as head and neck cancer patients, with opportunity to provide treatment.

The Department runs a weekly Journal Club including critical appraisal of articles, case discussion and case presentations with ample opportunity to also be involved in audit, clinical research, presentations, and scientific publication. In addition, there will be the opportunity to partake in postgraduate teaching including hands‑on courses for local practitioners. There is a varied case mix and trainees, which offers teaching and training experience for more senior staff. The department is small and offers a ‘district general’ type experience with close working relationships between maxillofacial, orthodontics, paediatrics and restorative dentistry.

Working for our organisation

St George's Healthcare NHS Trust is one of the largest healthcare units in the United Kingdom accommodating around 1000 beds and treating around 80,000 inpatient and day cases, and over 300,000 outpatients annually. The Trust employs over 6500 staff incorporating 675 Medical & Dental Staff. It provides general acute services together with specialty services including neurosciences, cardiothoracic, and specialist childrens services. A merger with Community Services Wandsworth took place in October 2010 providing integrated services in many areas. St George’s Hospital is the main teaching hospital in the western sector of the South Thames, and as such has developed links with most district general hospitals throughout South Thames West, and supports a significant training programme for junior doctors who rotate through the Trust.
