Job Summary

Join us to strengthen and improve IBD care for our community. As a Consultant Gastroenterologist, you will help develop a patient‑centred IBD service within a friendly and supportive department, with regular input from the University Hospital Southampton IBD team.

Our IBD Service
  • Team composition: 1 Consultant, 1 Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner, 5 IBD Clinical Nurse Specialists and 2 IBD Pathway Navigators.
  • Fortnightly IBD MDT: gastroenterology consultants (including UHS support), IBD CNS, Pathway Navigator, GI radiology, colorectal surgery and histopathologist.
  • Specialist pharmacist support enabling rapid initiation of evidence‑based therapies following MDT decisions.
  • Digital innovation: NHS England‑funded pilot site for MyMedicalRecord – a secure digital health platform that provides patients with information about their IBD care and enables proactive monitoring of disease activity and treatment response.
Key responsibilities

The role includes:

  • Participation in the acute gastroenterology rota, providing ward cover for gastroenterology inpatients two weeks in twelve and in‑hours cover for upper GI bleeds (0800‑1800).
  • Working with a team of 3 luminal gastroenterologists and 2 hepatologists.
  • Contribution to inpatient and outpatient IBD pathways, MDT meetings and surveillance endoscopy service.
  • Engagement in teaching, training, clinical audit and quality improvement.
Salary and Contract

Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 per annum, pro rata if part‑time. Contract: Permanent. Working pattern: Full‑time, Part‑time. Grade: Consultant.

Relocation

Relocation assistance up to £8,000 plus a relocation package of up to £8,000. A repayment clause applies. Payment is made once commenced and is subject to relevant terms and conditions.

Qualifications & Specialist Training
  • Completion of higher specialist training in gastroenterology and general internal medicine, or within 6 months of expected CCT date at time of interview.
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice.
Experience / Clinical Skills
  • Wide experience and high level of competence in general gastroenterology; JAG accreditation for OGD & colonoscopy.
  • Experience and expertise in management of upper GI bleeding and acute GI emergency presentations.
  • Depending on declared sub‑specialty interest: evidence of wide experience in hepatology, IBD, ERCP (with JAG accreditation), nutrition, therapeutic UGI endoscopy, therapeutic lower GI endoscopy.
  • Sound clinical judgement and risk management.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in wards, outpatient, theatre settings.
Management and Communication Skills
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, motivate and develop staff.
  • Willingness to lead clinical teams and develop specialist service.
  • Balancing individual and departmental demands; meeting NHS performance targets.
  • Good spoken and written English; effective communication with patients, relatives, colleagues, GPs, nurses, allied health professionals and outside agencies.
Teaching & Quality Improvement
  • Evidence of previous teaching and training, willingness to contribute to departmental teaching programmes.
  • Active involvement in clinical audit, risk reduction, clinical governance and implementation of evidence‑based practice.
