Job description

Job Title: Community Engagement Officer

Location: BMECP Centre, Brighton BN1 4ZE (Hybrid working available). Some outreach across Brighton & Hove and Sussex required.

Salary: SO1 Spinal Point 23 – £34,434 FTE (£17,217 pro rata)

Hours: Part-time (17.5 hours per week). Some evening and weekend work required.

Contract: 2 years, with possible extension subject to funding

Pension: 6% employer contribution

Main Purpose of the Job

To develop, lead and deliver BME community engagement, BMECP communications, and BME involvement activities that increase BME community access to services and strengthen BMECP’s connection with local communities, supporters, and partner organisations.

The postholder will work collaboratively as part of a small, supportive team to:

  • Engage BME communities and support them to develop, organise, and lead local initiatives.
  • Support individuals with basic employment skills such as CV writing, job applications, interview preparation and signposting.
  • Help new and emerging BME groups with practical tasks including setting up governance paperwork and opening bank accounts.
  • Deliver BME community engagement workshops and events and gather feedback from participants.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, records and communication with partners.
  • Contribute to continuous service improvement and quality assurance.
  • Support outreach activities, representing BMECP at events, community meetings and workshops.
  • Assist BME groups with governance, bank accounts, policies and capacity building needs.
  • Carry out duties in line with BMECP policies and safeguarding principles.
  • Undertake any other reasonable tasks requested by the Centre Manager or Board.
Digital and Offline Communications
  • Produce and distribute printed communications such as newsletters and publicity materials.
  • Maintain and develop BMECP’s digital presence (website updates, social media content, digital newsletters).
  • Capture and manage digital content (photos, videos, audio).
  • Produce engaging content that promotes BMECP’s work and amplifies the voices of service users.
  • Monitor and analyse web and social media engagement to shape future communications.
Person Specification
Skills & Experience
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to present complex information clearly and sensitively.
  • Excellent IT skills, including MS Office and online communication tools.
  • Visually creative with a strong eye for design.
  • Ability to manage deadlines in a busy and dynamic environment.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and handle sensitive information.
  • Track record in BME community development.
  • Experience in providing employment guidance to BME people.
  • Experience of producing content for social media platforms using Canva or similar design tools.
  • Understanding of the barriers faced by refugees, migrants, and BME communities in the UK.
  • Experience of working with statutory, private and voluntary sector service providers.
