Community Engagement & Development Officer
Cancer Care
Location
  • Based in Lancaster with travel throughout North Lancs & South Cumbria
Hours
  • 22½ hours per week

Together with the wider CancerCare team, promote and develop the charity’s services to help improve the quality of life for everyone affected by cancer or bereavement within the local communities.

The job holder will engage with the public, healthcare professionals, third sector organisations, and others to promote the services provided by the charity, supporting people to access different opportunities. They will facilitate groups working with people with lived experience to design and deliver activities within the organisation and community.

The Community Engagement & Development Officer will be responsible for advertising, promoting, and raising awareness of the charity’s services. They will plan and organise external events and activities to raise awareness of CancerCare’s wider work. They will also conduct regular consultations with service users to improve offerings, identify gaps, and develop new groups and services to meet community needs.

Responsibilities

Networking & Development – professional stakeholders

  • Engage with the NHS, employers, and educational institutions.
  • Contact external stakeholders across the geographical area to confirm their service offerings and develop additional links across all age ranges.
  • Promote the charity at events by giving talks, staffing publicity stands, and visiting other agencies, following planning with your Line Manager.
  • Identify future opportunities for service development and participate in reporting for service development meetings.
  • Collaborate and co-produce work with the wider CancerCare team.
  • Accurately record engagement opportunities.
  • Deliver an annual calendar of engagement events aligned with the strategy.
  • Assist with volunteer engagement and training alongside the Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Coordinate volunteer speakers for public events.

Support groups

  • Meet with CancerCare support groups monthly to help maintain, advertise, and attract new members.
  • Network with other groups to facilitate signposting for additional support.
  • Gather feedback from groups to improve services and identify unmet needs.

Clients and the general public

  • Signpost or refer clients to therapy teams or external providers as appropriate.

Promotion of the charity

  • Work with marketing to ensure promotional materials are relevant and appropriate.
  • Promote the charity’s work and safeguard its reputation.
  • Support the delivery of the Engagement Strategy with the Head of Development & Engagement.

General

  • Attend staff meetings and be involved in projects related to Development & Engagement and CancerCare.
  • Plan and prioritise workload with your Line Manager.
  • Manage your own time and record appointments using appropriate software.
  • Promote the aims, vision, and strategy of the charity.
  • Complete mandatory training and keep training up to date.
  • Adhere to the charity’s policies and procedures.
  • Work flexibly according to the role’s needs.
  • Undertake any other duties as required by the Executive Leadership Team.
