The role

As a Communication Systems Technician, you’ll be part of a team working on the Skynet project at an exciting stage of its evolution. You’ll help maintain and support critical infrastructure, ensuring systems operate to the highest standards. This is an entry-level role with plenty of opportunities to learn and develop your skills.

Working closely with the operations team, you’ll ensure systems are maintained to the highest standards, enabling secure and reliable communications for our customers.

This is a fantastic opportunity to start your engineering career in a fast‑paced, high‑impact environment. You’ll gain hands‑on experience, receive structured training over 18 months, and work alongside experienced professionals who will support your development every step of the way.

Day-to-day you’ll be:

As a Communication Systems Technician, you will be responsible for supporting both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance activities, contributing to the resolution of engineering challenges acting as the initial escalation point for fault diagnosis within the Skynet Network. You will assist the Shift Maintenance and Support Engineer and play a key role in delivering first‑line and second‑line maintenance tasks.

  • Assist in preparing fault reports and accurately record all maintenance activities.
  • Maintain and support Skynet infrastructure systems.
  • Follow authorised procedures and manuals as directed by the Operations Support Supervisor.
  • Collaborate with operations teams to ensure service continuity through effective troubleshooting.
  • Adhere to site Health & Safety and Radiation policies to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Perform routine and scheduled maintenance of satellite systems, following work orders, service schedules, and technical documentation to ensure optimal network performance.
  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues promptly and effectively.

The role is based onsite at Colerne and the set working times are Monday to Friday, totalling 37 hours per week.

Essential experience of the Communication Systems Technician
  • Experience in maintaining and diagnosing faults in communication equipment.
  • Experience of working to safety procedures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Technical background in an Engineering system discipline.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Qualifications for the Communication Systems Technician
  • ONC/HNC in Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
  • GCSE or Equivalent in Grade C in Maths, English and a science‑based subject.
