Overview

Commissioning Service Engineer - HV/LV Switchgear

Location - Scotland

We’re looking for a Commissioning Service Engineer to join our team in Scotland, working on HV/LV switchgear, transformers, and electrical distribution systems across the UK and overseas. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a field-based, problem-solving environment, enjoys variety in their work, and wants to develop expertise in installation, commissioning, maintenance, and fault diagnosis. What You’ll Do
  • Install, commission, and maintain switchgear, transformers, and related equipment (400V-33kV).
  • Perform testing and diagnostics, including Partial Discharge, thermal imaging, and oil sampling.
  • Lead on-site activities, supervising teams and coordinating with project managers.
  • Work flexibly, including travel across the UK and internationally, as part of a 24/7 on-call rota.
  • Produce reports and documentation to ensure high standards of work completion.
What We’re Looking For
  • Experience working with electrical distribution systems, switchgear, or transformers.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose faults in electrical equipment.
  • Knowledge of HV/LV systems and electrical safety regulations.
  • Willingness to travel and work flexibly, including some overseas assignments.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to supervise teams on-site.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • High Voltage Testing (415V - 33kV systems)
  • CT Magnetisation Curves using variac/volt & ammeter and CT analyser; polarity check without CT analyser.
  • CT Primary Injection — standard protection (OC/EF/Metering) configuration & high impedance schemes such as Bus Zone protection.
  • Relay Secondary Injection (electromechanical and solid-state relays) for current & voltage protection.
  • VT Primary Injection
  • Control Circuit Wiring testing & modification; verifying each panel against schematic diagrams and fault finding; ability to read schematics.
  • Mechanical/Electrical function testing of 415V - 33kV switchboards & networks
  • G59/G99 protection – Under/Over Voltage, Under/Over Frequency, ROCOF/dF/dT
  • Familiarity with basic secondary Injection sets (e.g., Sverker 760/780, T&R 100/200ADM, T&R DVS3)
  • Knowledge of BEBS S12 (1964) wire identification standard as used in UK HV switchgear
  • Knowledge of basic transformer protection devices and related test methods
  • Operational knowledge of basic auto-changeover schemes
