Clinical Fellow in HPB Surgery (POST CCT)
NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow
Job overview

This post is designed to support the activities of the HPB department and provide specialist advanced HPB training. The post holders will work alongside all of Consultant HPB surgeons in turn and be responsible to the clinical lead in HPB surgery. This is a one‑year post specifically intended for registrars who have completed their final year of training and are post CCT in general surgery, and wish to expand their HPB surgical experience. Two roles are available, the first starting in September 2026, and the second in October 2026.

There will be opportunity to undertake training in advanced HPB surgical techniques such as laparoscopic liver and pancreatic surgery, minimally invasive necrosectomy, surgery for chronic pancreatitis and complex open liver resection. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the delivery of an acute HPB service and may be asked to undertake some sessions independently or under supervision by one of the consultants. The candidate is expected to be competent in laparoscopic biliary surgery.

Main duties of the job

In addition to the responsibilities listed above, the successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in all aspects of the departmental research programme, allowing enhancement of their CV prior to application for a substantive position as a consultant in HPB surgery.

Working for our organisation

The HPB Surgical Unit at NUH manages patients with benign and malignant hepatobiliary and pancreatic conditions for Nottingham and surrounding areas. The unit provides specialist tertiary referral HPB services to a population of 2.5 million patients in Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, East Staffordshire and Derbyshire, as well as a local service for biliary surgery. The major surgical caseload included approximately 150 liver resections and 90 pancreatic resections, and a continued increase in major cancer and benign resectional workload is anticipated. The unit has three MDT / image review meetings per week and a departmental planning meeting weekly.
