Job description

Amey are a leading provider of full life-cycle engineering, operations and decarbonisation solutions, for transport infrastructure and complex facilities.

Working for us, you’ll be delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions that enhance life and protect our shared future.

Our people are driven by a set of strong values, based on safety, insight and collaboration.

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Engineer to join our Consulting Rail team. With shared office locations in Birmingham, Derby, York, Bristol, Manchester, and Cardiff, we welcome applications from candidates across these regions.

Key Projects

As an appointed Design Partner on some of the UK’s most significant and complex rail infrastructure projects including Wales & Borders. We are proud to support major programmes such as Northern Powerhouse Rail, Eastern Routes Partnership, North West & Central Framework, Core Valley Lines, Trans-Pennine Route Upgrade, and Cardiff Crossrail. Our in‑house engineering team delivers design solutions across all Network Rail stages and disciplines, driving improved connectivity, enhancing passenger journeys, and shaping the future of rail safety and efficiency.

These projects also provide a diverse range of opportunities for personal and professional development, whether you are working on long‑term, high‑value programmes or smaller, community‑focused initiatives. With these frameworks in place, you will have the chance to influence infrastructure projects that shape the region’s future.

The role

Our Engineers play an important part within the Consulting Rail Design team and alongside our clients, including Network Rail. As a Civil Engineer, you will support the Senior Engineer in the design and delivery of a variety of rail design schemes. You will also guide and mentor junior team members to ensure high‑quality designs and successful outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Work in a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks.
  • Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme. Oversee the actions of more junior members and take responsibility for their work.
  • Liaise with client and supplier representatives at the peer level, attend progress meetings, respond to queries, etc.
  • Manage a small, locally based, single‑discipline technical team and take responsibility for the delivery of the workload.
  • Contribute to the preparation of bids and the general work‑winning function.
  • Work on site, either on a visiting basis or in a full‑time but temporary role and including out of hours working.
  • Assume the role of people manager when required by the business.
What you will bring to us
  • Relevant experience in rail engineering, the ability to work in a commercial and customer‑focused way which achieves programme, meets performance targets and generates income.
  • Confidence to work under minimum supervision and competence to check the work of others and supervise less experienced or junior staff.
  • Good understanding of DMRB, other national standards, best practice guidance, local standards etc.
  • Good understanding of the CDM regulations and their relevance to rail design.
  • Ability to support the preparation of briefs for fee quotes for the delivery of services when required.
  • Deliver on time, within budget and to the quality required.
  • Keep up to date with industry best practice and where appropriate, apply best practice within the team.
