Job description
Bank Mammographer

We are seeking a qualified Mammographer with experience of working in a breast unit to join us on the Bank for regular sessions.

The role encompasses working both at the Breast Centre at The Great Western Hospital and on the service's two mobile units which travel around Wiltshire on a three year round plan.

The successful candidate will be expected to carry out routine breast screening and the more specialist mammographic examinations required in screening assessment clinics and symptomatic breast clinics. The post is that of a senior grade and so duties will encompass some managerial and supervisory tasks.

Screening Mammographers (Band 4 and above) may apply.

The post will be a Bank position either full time (37.5 hours per week) or part time (in full days) as agreed with applicant, principally within 8.30-5.30 normal working hours but you will have the opportunity to cover some limited evening and weekend work.

Main duties of the job
  • To independently assess each patient. Perform specialist mammography at the speed and technical skill level demanded by the service, adapting radiographic techniques according to the needs of the patient.
  • To work at a band 6 senior Radiographer level, taking responsibility for the smooth running of clinics and workload management.
  • To provide an excellent standard of care to women attending for mammography.
  • Be sufficiently informed and professionally competent to identify and address patients' information needs with respect to breast awareness and other health issues.
  • To carry out discussion with the patient regarding clinical implications and outcomes. Deal appropriately with complex, sensitive or contentious information on a regular basis.
  • To assist the Radiologist with Ultrasound examinations and to take a lead role in patient care and clinical support during interventional procedures, including image guided biopsies in the assessment and symptomatic clinics.
  • To meet the psychological needs of anxious patients undergoing biopsies and carry out basic nursing procedures to dress puncture sites and give after-care advise.
  • To support patients and relatives who may be in a distressed or anxious state with sensitivity and empathy.

Job responsibilities
  • To carry out and record routine quality control procedures, equipment tests, and be responsible for reporting any adverse occurrences to nominated QA radiographer or line manager.
  • To assist with the transfer and management of digital images.
  • To travel regularly to the mobile screening units when required, must have own transport and a valid full UK driving licence or equivalent.
  • Transport by data sticks, paperwork and other items to and from the mobile units daily, ensuring any patient identifiable data it is stored adequately in accordance with PIAG section 60 and in relation to security.

Qualifications
  • Current registration with the Health Professions Council
  • Certificate in Mammographic practice (or equivalent), or willingness to undertake training and study to achieve certificate
  • Degree in Radiography or equivalent Radiographic qualification
  • Minimum Grade A-C Mathematics and English GCSE
  • ECDL or equivalent IT skills qualification or working towards
Experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Breast Screening programme and Breast imaging
  • Experience of working with distressed or anxious patients
  • In depth experience of breast imaging
